I can only think they were desperately finishing the nursery (I thought I was disorganised )

Why the scepticism? Just because she gave birth in the aisle? Perhaps she didn't want to move, perhaps the staff had a panic and didn't think to move her. Sometimes news reports leave important details out - maybe the ambulance was delayed, doesn't mean she didn't give birth very quickly! It doesn't even say whether this was her first baby or not (unless I've missed it!) A friend of mine had an even shorter labour than this. She literally felt a bit funny so left toddlers early, got home, opened the car door and realised the baby was coming straight away. She had time to leave a hilarious screechy message on her partners voicemail and then the baby was born!

TranquilaManana · 29/07/2007 13:22

ooh, good point about moving past a certain point.
with ds2 labour was v fast. woke up w contractions 2mins apart. had to wait about 25 mins for my mum to arrive (to look after ds1) before leaving for the birth unit with dp. and i damn nearly reached a point where i was going nowhere.
dp was slightly hysterically insistant that we get in the car and go though. and i really wanted that birth pool (they were already running for me thank god). bloody nearly climbed out of the roof light on the way there and couldve killed dp for not letting me stay where i was! was glad of that pool when i got there.

dont think anyones been scornful of the woman, have they?

princessmel · 29/07/2007 13:27

I can't believe eveyone is saying mean things!!

She didn't write in her birth plan that she'd like to have the baby in 30 mins in Wilkies.

Thank goodness it was healthy thats what I think.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 29/07/2007 13:31

I'd been having contractions for over 12hrs and even thouygh I decided to go to the hospital to get checked out I still didn't think I was in labour!

And as for moving - I wanted a mobile labour with DS3 (and did to some extent) but like lou in the later stages they came so close together I ended up in the same position for the last 2hrs of it as I just couldn't move.

bananabump · 29/07/2007 13:32

Not scornful of the poor woman at all, I'm sure it wasn't her plan! I was just a bit shocked that the wilko folk couldn't have got her in a back room. But as you said, she might not have been able to move which is a different kettle of fish altogether. And like you said, at least baby was healthy!

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 29/07/2007 14:35

Geez no empathy here then If she was anything like me I couldn't move in the later stages and I don't think I would have even if I had been on the stage at Wembley Stadium with a bunch of can can girls as my MWs.

SSSandy2 · 29/07/2007 14:36

why did she have to give birth IN THE AISLE though? Surely they have a staffroom or something?

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 29/07/2007 14:40

Err because she couldn't move??!!!

lou33 · 29/07/2007 17:13

honest to god the way i felt by the time i was giving birth i wouldnt have cared if i was giving birth in the middle of wembley stadium on cup final day

motherinferior · 29/07/2007 17:15

Anyone who tries to move a labouring woman away from where she's labouring is IMO very brave but, er, risking quite a lot of GBH.

motherinferior · 29/07/2007 17:22

I mean, think about it; you go from pretty well no contractions to full-on birth in 30 minutes and someone tries to ease you tactfully out of the public eye?

Mind you, my first labour you could have decorated the whole bloody house from scratch between first twinge and final emergence.

lou33 · 29/07/2007 17:23

you are right mi, the last labour i had, i threatened to kick the doc in the face when he was trying to make me change position

motherinferior · 29/07/2007 17:25

Towards the end of my second (shorter - seven hour) labour DP tried helpfully to rub my back. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD move.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 29/07/2007 17:28

In the paint aisle? Perhaps she did have aromatherapy in her birth plan.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 29/07/2007 17:30

Karissa is OK, I think. Better than Honeysuckle Blush or Magnolia.

Washersaurus · 29/07/2007 17:32

I can't imagine how giving birth in Wilko's could be at all 'dignified', as she described it

lou33 · 29/07/2007 17:34

giving birth isnt dignified , full stop

Gobbledigook · 29/07/2007 17:35

I went to hospital not at all sure I was in labour - just went to check as felt niggly. Half an hour later ds2 was out. I was fine one minute, waters broke the next and literally that was it - 2 minutes later he was born amidst my terrified screaming!! It was a huge, huge shock.

I did think for ages afterwards how I could have been in a shop or in the car when my waters popped.

So, I do believe it!

Gobbledigook · 29/07/2007 17:37

Ditto lou about when it's fast you can't move. All I did was gasp - I couldn't speak...then I just screamed 'HELP ME, HELP ME!' for about 5 minutes - I was just so unprepared for it and I couldn't move or do anything.

popsycal · 29/07/2007 18:23

20 mins before I gave birth to ds2, my dad helped me into the car and said 'good luck sweetheart' and i told him to f off. I have NEVER sworn in front of my dad before.
THAT is what fast labour does to you

foxinsocks · 29/07/2007 18:27

ds was born very quickly. I got to the hospital - I even told the midwife I didn't think I should come in (waters had broken, but no proper contractions).

Midwife checked me over, left me in the room. Within 30 minutes, I was completely overwhelmed and the baby was born before the midwife had even come back (famously, she opened the door and squealed 'the baby is out?' and ran over!).

It was so fast, I was shaking uncontrollably from the adrenalin (and throwing up, ewww). I had to be covered in blankets and given a shot of something or other because they were worried I was going to go into shock!

Sexonlegs · 29/07/2007 18:36

My waters broke at home, I got on a my knees over the loo straight away as felt sick, and dd2's head was showing within 5 minutes! I really could have stayed there, but the paramedics moved me to the sitting room as the cloakroom was too cramped! So, anything is possible.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/07/2007 18:38

poor woman, v glad reading this that my 15 minute labour started (and finished) at home in the bedroom.

DontlookatmeIamborrrring · 29/07/2007 18:40

The floor in wilkos is probably cleaner than some hospitals!

madmumof5 · 29/07/2007 18:43

my 1st labour was 46 mins from my 1st twinge to havi dd in my arms
