Ban on armbands

so get foam oens

I didn't know that any pools issued armbands that you could borrow - wouldn't have occurred to me - in the same way that I wouldn't expect to borrow a swimming costume from the pool. As long as they're not actually banning anyone from wearing armbands, I don't have a problem with it (though the reason seems rather bogus).

FlameDelacour · 24/07/2007 09:37

Saw that on local news yesterday

They have those floaty boat things that you can sit teenies in, they are a waste of money if you don't go regularly, so the pool ones were ideal

FlameDelacour · 24/07/2007 09:38

Assuming it is the pool I am thinking of, there was a big bin thing, and just a load of rubber rings, armbands and floaty things all blown up in it ready to borrow

MrsBoo · 24/07/2007 09:38

It doesn't affect my pool, just read this in the paper, and thought it was interesting.
I don't like using them anyway for my kids - it was just the concept. Like at one of the pools near me, where there is a 1:1 policy therefore I can't take my two DC, without another adult helper!

People should take their own anyway imho.

nannynick · 25/07/2007 18:26

My local pool supplies armbands.

Given the water is chlorinated, and the arm bands are in that water a lot of the time, surely risk from germs is minimal.

Whatever next, they will be saying we can't go swimming at all, because children pee in the water!

MsHighwater · 08/08/2007 17:05

The pool where I used to take my DD to swimming classes had a supply of inflatables as well as the foam disks for use during lessons. AFAIK, they still use them.

Surprised by the opposition to using them, though. My daughter uses the foam discs most of the time - we should be able to reduce from 3 to 2 to 1 as she gets more confident in the pool. Until she can float without support, the discs allow her to float without someone holding on all the time. (She's 2) I think they let her get used to being in water and give her the chance to learn the beginnings of swimming without fear. She just loves being independent in the water and always heads for the deep end, protesting when I pull her back to the shallows!

We use inflatable armbands when we go on holiday.

ProfYaffle · 08/08/2007 17:12

Oh I see, our local pool recently withdrew their armbands, this explains why.

edam · 08/08/2007 17:14

Our local pool has stopped providing arm bands for this reason. Deeply daft IMO. One of those 'let's imagine the most extreme thing that could go wrong and pretend it is a likely scenario' moments.

elasticsortinghandstand · 08/08/2007 17:16

bloody risk assessment people, health and safety or whoever they are!

our local playground no longer has the monkey bars, someone told me there had been an accident, ! what hold the first page, somebody fell off the monkey bars!
ludicrous

elasticsortinghandstand · 08/08/2007 17:18

tjhey are afrai of being sued, that is all

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

tortoiseSHELL · 08/08/2007 17:21

Just take your own.

tortoiseSHELL · 08/08/2007 17:21

It's not a 'ban on armbands' it's 'stopping providing them'. They're not banned...

CaptainUnderpants · 08/08/2007 17:28

Parents who are 'outraged' at this should get off their arse and bring their own ! I have only known one pool to provide arm bands and that was near my MILs. Not a big deal not providing them IMO .

MerlinsBeard · 08/08/2007 17:33

they cost about £1 from tesco.

Our pools don't lend them out, you can buy then for a rip off price though. They don't even lend those floaty baby things. In fact at one of my local pools you are lucky to get out of the changing rooms alive never mid borrow armbands!!!

elasticsortinghandstand · 08/08/2007 17:43

yes but people forget or their own break... used to be a good standby. that's all.

CaptainUnderpants · 08/08/2007 17:46

Perhaps in future people wont 'forget' . Do they forget the swimming costume and expect to borrow one ?

muppetgirl · 08/08/2007 17:51

I would never think to borrow armbands...

btw my dh took ds 1 to the local swimming pool and It cost £8!!!!!! My ds is 3.5. It was cheaper for us to join the local David Lloyd gym as now we can take him 3-4 times a week and it is a heck of a lot cleaner...

Miaou · 08/08/2007 18:09

Our swimming pool lends out armbands, and those inflatable seats, already blown up. Ds does have his own but we did forget them earlier this week so borrowed pool ones.
