Charity begins at home doesn't it?

I was unsure as to where to post this. Having just watched the news, and hearing there are 10's of thousands in the UK right now, with out electricity or water, I really feel i would like to help. I really am only in a position to donate a little money, however i am quite sure the people of the UK that have lost their homes and belongings due to the floods would appreciate anything right now. The trouble is, I still haven't heard of any charities or help that has been set up, I can't even find anything when I Google it. Can anyone help? not just me finding a charity but more importantly, those fellow citizens of the UK that HAVE lost everything and are going though a very difficult time right NOW.

It's probably a bit early for anything to have been set up just yet. people are still in temporary accommodation and have no idea of the flood damage yet.

Not just those folk in Gloucester what about in the North, it's not too soon for them. Believe me i know just how difficult it can be to get contents insurance, and we aren't even affected. There must be something we can do to help these people.

in south yorkshire the bbc radio sheffield i think is coordinating the 'help'

from the sheffield local pages:

Help from CSV and BBC Radio Sheffield

CSV is Britain's biggest volunteering charity. BBC Radio Sheffield is setting up new scheme to register people who'd like to help others - collecting prescriptions, keeping an eye on the elderly, cleaning up mud and flood damage, helping people to get clean water, providing bedding, accommodation, help with pets and any type of manual help.

This is a good neighbour scheme to supplement the emergency services and the established voluntary bodies like the British Red Cross and the WRVS. The scheme is supported by MP David Blunkett, Dame Elizabeth Hoodless of CSV, and the region's MP's.

If you are in need of help like this of if YOU can help, call the BBC Radio Sheffield Action Desk: 0114 267 5444, or email [email protected]

We will then match you with the people who need help/can help. We're looking for your help whether you're an individual or part of a group. You don't need to have volunteered before to take part.

We will also have a team of CSV volunteers from Sheffield, Leeds, York and beyond who can help co-ordinate some practical activity and help.

Remember: call the Radio Sheffield Action Desk on 0114 267 5444, or email [email protected]

Flood Appeal Fund

The City Council in partnership with all the other local authorities is opening a dedicated Flood Appeal Fund to harness all of the goodwill of people who want to make a donations to people who've lost everything.

It's called the 'Lord Mayors Charity Fund' and the funds will be shared among victims and familes across South Yorkshire.

Cheques should be made out to the 'Lord Mayors Charity Fund Flood Appeal' and sent to Sheffield City Council Town Hall Sheffield S1 2HH.
