Finally, the people have spoken - the national embarassment of Fiona Onasanya is MP no more, Labour can finally sigh a great sigh of relief!

So, why did it take so long, and how long before it's May's turn?

Right after Corbyn I imagine.

MockerstheFeManist · 03/05/2019 11:02

It took so long because the local council has to organise a petiton at public expense and raise the signatures. There will now be a by-election in which the delusional woman may stand, but is unlikely to be returned.

The simple alternative would be to say that an MP detained in one of Her Majesty's Hotels is absent without permission from parliament and therefore disqualified with immediate effect.

As it stands, the Welsh Tory who did not know what an expense claim was may be next on the block.

There is no rule that says MPs have to attend. Sinn Fein never has; Mhairi Black practically needs a visitors badge.

Aren't people with criminal convictions barred from standing for parliament ?

peteneras · 04/05/2019 02:02

She still insists she's innocent of the offence.

She still insists she's innocent of the offence.

As do nearly all criminals.

leckford · 04/05/2019 07:53

She is doing it for the money, I think she has been struck off from being a lawyer.

All the parties need a change of personnel, the Corbyn hysteria has died down now people have realised what a moron he is, but due to their leadership voting system they are stuck with him. I feel sorry for Mrs May but they need someone more forceful

GabrielleNelson · 04/05/2019 07:58

I don't feel it's asking too much of our elected representatives, who make the laws we all have to abide by, who fix the national budget, who could decide to take the country into war, to have some sort of moral compass and enough intelligence and common sense to find out the rules on expenses and abide by them, erring on the side of the spirit of the rules, not the letter, where necessary.

I also want them to be strong characters who can't be bullied or blackmailed into a course of action by someone else, and who take responsibility for what they do.

I know, I know. There goes the porcine flotilla, flying over the house.

No. For most offences you are only barred if you are sentenced to more than 1 year in jail for the offence. The exception is certain electoral offences where you are barred regardless of sentence but the bar is time limited - 3 years or 5 years depending on the offence.

And the proposed Unity Remain candidate, the excellent Femi Oluwole, is intmidated into standing down by the Corbynite thugs.

New Kind of Politics, anyone?
