Boy 10 mauled to death at holiday park

I can't link on this phone but it is on most news sites. The owner was found off site after a police hunt so possibly fled when she knew her dog had killed a child. It's just awful - a young boy probably just going to the loo in the middle of the night on a campsite having his life ended because of a dangerous dog and an owner who can't control and/ or keep it securely away

No breed is 100% safe but are we denying they all have different characteristics? It’s a generalisation but based on evidence of the nature of the dogs and what they were used for in history.

We did a lot of research in to different breeds before we got our dog. The different characteristics of each breed was a deciding factor for us.
Some dog breeds are just more gentle and
less likely to be aggressive. You don’t see many examples of golden retrievers mauling children? You don’t see unscrupulous people breeding labs and retrievers and walking round with them in a aggressive manner like you do with some breeds.

Still in agreement that no dog could 100% be reliably safe around children.

This is just such a sad story poor little boy
But will parent's ever learn I have just been exasperated I have been out walking my daughter's large rottie x I saw a mother with a pram approaching with a small child on a scooter she was about 5 I had the dog on the grass away from path in sit position to allow them to pass he lives with a small child is friendly but bouncy you cannot be too careful I had to tell the little girl to keep back as she seemed about to come and give him a cuddle the mum said nothing
This has happened to me before with my own dog a boxer who fortunately was very laid back and a little girl came running at full pelt and gave him a cuddle

Bowchicawowow · 15/04/2019 14:57

Nesssie I know people like you love to take these points about how dangerous labradors are and how lovely bull breeds are but an innocent child was savaged to death by a bull breed. It’s pretty sick to be honest.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 14:59

If a dog is likely to bite a small child who runs up to it (yes, I know they shouldn’t, but it happens) then it should be muzzled. Simple as that.

crazycatgal · 15/04/2019 15:00

@Nesssie I said a child or an adult, if you want to read my post properly. Babies are entirely different.

Stop frothing at the mouth trying to defend bull breeds.

Nesssie · 15/04/2019 15:03

Bowchicawowow I agree, what happened what tragic. But blaming and culling an entire breed(s) is not the answer. By people only thinking certain breed are dangerous, makes them too complacent that any breed can turn, and no dog should be left alone with a child.

This is demonstrated by a pp above saying that her cute fluffy dog bred for companionship is not dangerous, when a 'cute fluffy' lakeland terrier has just put a 6 week old baby in intensive care.
Just because its small and fluffy does not make it child safe.

rosie1959 · 15/04/2019 15:04

Bertrandrussell - No he is not likely to bit at all he is daft as a brush But that was not the point I was making The child should be taught not to run and cuddle strange dogs
As a mum if my child wanted to approach a dog I would ask the owner first if it was ok Just common sense

Nesssie · 15/04/2019 15:05

crazycatgal does it make a difference if the dog only attacks a baby, child or adult?

crazycatgal · 15/04/2019 15:05

@Nesssie I said that my small, fluffy dog wouldn't be able to maul a child or an adult to death, not that he couldn't be dangerous. Improve your comprehension skills.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 15:05

Of course no child should approach an unknown dog. But they shouldn’t run in front of swings either. It happens.

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 15/04/2019 15:06

I was bitten by a Lab. Fucking bitch owner had him out on a walking trail with no lead and he rushed at me, leapt up, and bit me. She got all pissy when my H and I whipped out the phones and started taking photos and told her it's an offence and a police matter, which it is. Well, fuck her. If that had been a child it would have been at the level of their face or worse. If dumb gits get a dog and don't police it, it's sad that the dog might have to be put down, but well, the law is there because far too many arse owners are not responsible and their animal is a threat to the public.

According to all these people their dog is a 'softie' and 'never does that to anyone' or hasn't before, or was provoked, just excuses and excuses.

Delatron · 15/04/2019 15:09

I don’t think we can use the baby example.

Dogs will think babies are toys. A small, fluffy dog wouldn’t be able to maul a child or an adult. Any dog could do harm to a baby. That’s why they should never be left alone together even for a second.

hazandduck · 15/04/2019 15:11

Totally agree with @BertrandRussell, the dog should be muzzled. The safety of a child or adult trumps the convenience of a dog owner.
And yes, totally with you @Naturatint. There are just always excuses.

Nesssie · 15/04/2019 15:11

A small, fluffy dog wouldn’t be able to maul a child and that is extremely dangerous thinking.

mydogisthebest · 15/04/2019 15:14

I agree that Labradors are not the wonderful placid dogs people make them out to be.

My previous dog was attacked by one. My dog was on lead and the lab came running up and started snarling and trying to bite my dog. Luckily my dog had thick long fur and the lab could not really get to his skin. My dog never once tried to retaliate.

All the stupid owner said was "Oh he has never done that before"!. My dog was never the same after that. He was very nervous around any dog lab size or bigger and really did not like labs any more. Before the attack he loved all dogs.

Delatron · 15/04/2019 15:16

I meant an older child and not a baby/small child.

It’s not dangerous thinking though as I’d still never leave dogs and children together.
It’s a fact that a bulldog will have much stronger jaws than a smaller fluffy breed.

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 15/04/2019 15:23

Oh, yes, my, they all say that. 'Never done that before' try to blame it on you. Nope, not buying it. Load of shit. These gits deserve prosecuted as they shouldn't be keeping a dog.

Little dogs can be deadly too.

Bowchicawowow · 15/04/2019 16:02

Good grief. Someone has posted a story about a pack of small dogs in Oklahoma attacking a woman to prove that bull breeds in the UK shouldn’t be banned Hmm

Nesssie · 15/04/2019 16:06

Bowchicawowow Because we are know that American dogs and British dogs are completely different... Hmm

JaneEyre07 · 15/04/2019 16:09

I can't bear to think of what that poor little boy went through..... imagine his last moments, terrified and alone.

And no one will ever know what happened.

Let down by the person he trusted most in the world - his Mother. Who on earth leaves a 9 year old alone in a caravan Sad

Bookworm4 · 15/04/2019 16:09

@bow
My dogs are not a risk because they are trained, sociable dogs with a responsibile owner.
Go take your ignorance and hatred somewhere else or go cuddle your perfect fluffy dog.

Shutuptodd · 15/04/2019 16:13

@Bowchicawowow no I posted it to show the people saying their little dogs cant do damage that they can. I couldn't give a toss if dogs were banned or not I dont really like them.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 16:15

My dp has scars on his face from being bitten by a West Highland White as a baby.

crazycatgal · 15/04/2019 16:17

It's not hard for any dog to cause damage to a baby. That's why you shouldn't leave dogs alone with them.
