Boy 10 mauled to death at holiday park

I can't link on this phone but it is on most news sites. The owner was found off site after a police hunt so possibly fled when she knew her dog had killed a child. It's just awful - a young boy probably just going to the loo in the middle of the night on a campsite having his life ended because of a dangerous dog and an owner who can't control and/ or keep it securely away

@handsoff
Further to that, these 'people' will choose another breed; huskys, akitas are growing in popularity.
Just to add I'm a bull breed owner and most definitely not one of those type of people.

Wolfiefan · 16/04/2019 09:32

But we have banned some breeds and nothing has improved. Surely if you want to ban all breeds owned by irresponsible owners then that’s a very long list.

MarthasGinYard · 16/04/2019 09:33

'Stop scaremongering and frothing.'

The only frothing was from the dogs jaw post killing.

And from the pictures and info it certainly was some bull dog type.

KissingInTheRain · 16/04/2019 09:33

Surely as a simple initial step we could just ban dogs over a certain size and weight?

Wolfiefan · 16/04/2019 09:35

Some bulldog type.
Like some terrier type. Or some hound type? That’s not a breed.
Ban all the dogs?
Ban only the big dogs?
Stupid.
Full disclosure. I have a giant breed. I have worked bloody hard to ensure that she behaves. She doesn’t approach strangers. She has recall. She will move off the path if she’s in anyone’s way. She walks well on lead. She’s a Gold Good Citizen.
Should she be banned because she’s big?

@kissing
So what, ask people to euthanise their pets based on size?
I have a medium/large bull breed and he plays with a Labradoodle and a retriever who are significantly larger than him; that's a ludicrous suggestion.

Bookworm4 · 16/04/2019 09:40

If the ill informed people on here would read up on the current DDA and how ineffective it has been in it's supposed breed ban you would realise a ban does not/ has not worked over the last 25years.
There are wonderful organisations trying to have this acted repealed and DDA made fit for purpose, it should always be deed not breed.
Again, I'll refer to the baby who was attacked last week; do we ban small terriers? I've mentioned this several times but it is ignored as people keep up with their ignorance regards larger/bull breed dogs.

Whitney168 · 16/04/2019 09:42

Even if you made the licences expensive they’d find a way to pay.

There has been all manner of legislation in place for many years around dogs (and sure the same applies in many other areas). The responsible comply and the idiots don't. It was ever thus, and ever more shall be.

I think a good long prison sentence for this dog's owner might be a good start. The only thing that is going to make any difference at all - and then not much, I fear - is serious consequences for the owners of these dogs.

KissingInTheRain · 16/04/2019 09:43

But not everyone’s as good as you Wolfie.

It is a bit brainless to keep saying that potentially lethal animals should be available to anyone because some people are more conscientious than others.

Many people now want to see stronger restrictions because of the harm being done by dogs. That would inevitably affect good owners but it’s the price to be paid for sensible measures to protect us all.

Presumably, yes. You’re making an excellent argument for a wider ban.

Bookworm4 · 16/04/2019 09:49

@kissing
I feel like I'm on repeat or people only read what they want to fit with their opinion.
It is FACT that banning breeds does NOT work, we have had 4 banned breeds for 25 years and it has not reduced the numbers or dog bite incidents.
Innocent dogs should not lead constricted lives or lose their lives because of the few idiots who are irresponsible.
Please look up Born Innocent or DDA Watch and see the volume of innocent dogs who are wrongly seized for their looks and no wrong doing, it devastated families and also wastes millions in public money.

Bookworm4 · 16/04/2019 09:50

@kissing
That point regards terriers is proof we cannot blame/ban one breed. No I'll never agree with blaming a breed.

Wolfiefan · 16/04/2019 09:50

So PTS my healthy and well behaved dog because some idiot might own a dog the same size and not control it properly?
Has nobody read the information above about the bans already in place failing to reduce injuries caused by dogs?
This was a horrific thing. A child has died. And that is undeniably awful. Completely horrific. But some of the responses here are just so poorly thought out and lack reason and thought behind them.

MarthasGinYard · 16/04/2019 09:50

I was out walking recently with Dd and these two men had two huge dogs on leads.

A lady walked past with CKC spaniel on a long lead.

This man yelled "pick your dog up, if mine wants to kill it there's nothing I can do"

I was horrified

She pulled the dog near her and the two men strutted past saying....

"These are Japanese Akito's not giant teddy bears"

Says it all really.

When we got back to the car park they were cranking them into the back of some tiny little car.

Grim

But why repeat that to me, Book?

I don’t think we should have a selective ban. I think the time’s come for a general ban.

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 16/04/2019 09:53

100% Flaxmeadow.

KissingInTheRain · 16/04/2019 09:59

As for killing or confiscating existing dogs, no (unless there’s reason in a particular case to do that).

A ban could come in via licensing without the option to get further dogs. Over time we’d curtail dog ownership, or possibly owning anything bigger than one of those toy dog types.

Hands, oh right. Cats and hamsters only then!

(Waits for a dog lover to post a story about a devil hamster that savaged its owner and had to be chased across three counties by armed police.)

Bookworm4 · 16/04/2019 10:14

@kissing
Again, you are missing the point, small breeds can damage as well hence why breed bans do not work.
Legislation for longer sentences and for animal owning bans to be enforced, I've lost count of the amount of abuse cases where it's revealed the accused has previously been banned. Licences issued in conjunction with training course,that are enforced, affordable neutering. Rescues have tighter criteria for adoption than most breeders, BYB needs to be stamped out with enforceable fines/benefit sanctions.
