School strike for climate

I've been increasingly anxious and sad about climate change in recent months - I always have been, and that's why I went and learnt about it - and I just want to say how very pleased and humbled I am that our young people are making the stand that we should have made twenty or thirty years ago.
I don't think climate change can be beaten by individuals, it needs governments to take action. But they won't unless they think the voting public want them to. Our amazing young people are standing up and saying that they do.

(that's why I've come on here and put up lots of stuff about climate change, of course. MN has got millions of members, it's changed the discourse about gender - maybe it can do the same for climate. After all, mums have kids whose future we care about.)

I went to the local one with my two boys. It seems that the politicians need to be educated by our youth on this. Remember Rupert Murdoch is the most influential man in the media and the Sun is notoriously light on climate change and science.

That's right! Climate stories don't get mentioned in the Murdoch press (even in the online versions). The kids are bypassing that and getting information from elsewhere. That's great, apart from the fact that there's no quality control. So some of the kids are finding out, quite rightly, that we've got serious problems with climate - some of them are finding out that the aliens are about to land, or whatever. And some of them have been paying attention in their geography lessons but think it can't possibly be true because if it was, then surely the adults wouldn't be so blase about it.
So, yeah, I think we need to show the climate strikers our support, not just by turning up to protests, but also by putting pressure on local and national governments and the media to take climate change seriously.

You can tell how ecologically minded the kids were by their debris

That rubbish pile is awful. That's not a rural area, so will any of those kids walk or get public transport today?

Isn't that Parliament Square? Lots of demonstrations held there so it may not have been the climate change protestors. But I agree if it was they should be ashamed of themselves. If I was a teacher who knew some of my pupils had been there, I'd be asking questions.

Hi Smithsinarazz, There's a mums protest in London on 12th May if you'd like to join? We are a group of ordinary mums who are just as worried about this as you are. Come join us in support of our kids! #MothersClimateMarch.
