fined £200 if baby's father isn't name on the certificate

see here

erm what are you meant to do if you were not married and your baby's father refuses to sign it like mine?

or what about arsehole fathers who cannot be trusted and are not reliable. they suddenly get parental responsibility without having to get off their backsides and go and get it from the court. i like the fact that if you don't name them cause you don't think they deserve parental rights if they bother to go and get those rights it usually means they have realised they actually want to be involved and then i don't have a problem with them having parental responsibility.

but for dad's that don't deserve it and bugger off and don't help it could mean in 10 years time he could turn around and make life very difficult for the mum.

sorry if it doesn't read very well, english is not my strong point.

Sorry-had too many glasses of the fun stuff-is this going forward or retrospective?

lemonaid · 02/07/2007 22:29

It's never going to happen. Completely impractical for a whole host of reasons -- just the IPPR sounding off as usual.

It's a theory, it's not something that's definitely going to happen. Am also very against this proposal for various reasons.

nappyaddict · 02/07/2007 23:12

also it could end up with loads of false names being put down for people who are unsure of the paternity of their child.

IPPR = Institute for Public Policy Research (the think tank who came up with this idea).

elesbelles · 03/07/2007 09:14

it cant happen. you cant just 'name the father' he has to give consent if your not married. so if, as they say, its to force dead beat dads, the deadbeat dads are not going to sign are they? because they are just that....deadbeats!!

Judy1234 · 03/07/2007 09:53

Presumably a lot of women have no idea.
I can't remember what my sister put - she bought sperm from the US and used a UK clinic for IVF. I remember her debating it - sperm donor or to leave it blank. I can't remember.

nappyaddict · 03/07/2007 11:55

it could only work if the law was changed and you could put them down without them being there. but i don't think that's fair cos then women might lie about who the father is. i personally think if the father agrees you should be able to put him on with or without him there but if they don't agree then if a paternity test proves they are the father then you should be able to put them on.

i think it unfair that the mum would be fined £200, as ppl have said you need the fathers consent to have his name put on there, and why should single mums pay the pennance for ignorant blokes who DONT want admit their fatherhood? absolute b*cks!

FlamingTomatoes · 06/07/2007 17:14

What if you didn't know his name?

Twiglett · 06/07/2007 17:16

bad reporting

its policy research not actual policy

it'll never happen as its too one-dimensional a concept

madamez · 09/07/2007 15:30

It's just not possible. People do get PG after merry drunken orgies when they would have no idea of the sperm provider's name or even what he looked like in daylight. But it's not the Government's job to punish them financially for having a lively sexual history, is it?
