What do you think about this?

A cafe banned a troublesome customer who complained to the owner that her "lunch was ruined" - by a mother using a breast pump.

Good!

Glad to see employers recognising the importance of breast feeding and expressing

Shikah · 30/01/2019 08:53

2 people with a point to prove, no one really thinking about what is best for mother and baby. Surely a private space would be a more comfortable place for the staff member to pump than in the cafe in front of customers. I think women should breast feed anywhere and everywhere and anyone objecting should stay at home, but this story seems a good bit of advertising for a vegan cafe iyswim. A full page story free, advertising their right on values. I’m a cynical old bag, I know.

PerspicaciaTick · 30/01/2019 08:53

I hope she was expressing in front of her customers because that is what she chose to do and not because of a lack of staff space away from customers. I'm glad she has her employer's support.

Smileymoon · 31/01/2019 12:00

I breastfed all of mine so am definitely all for breastfeeding. I would not be happy eating my lunch watching someone using a pump. I wouldn't have commented on it but she should have had a private space for that.

Fazackerley · 31/01/2019 12:03

I think having to watch someone use a breast pump is a bit grim and would judge the cafe for not providing a private space. But I wouldn't complain and if she had nowhere else to do it, then fine. I breastfed all of mine for far too long btw.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2019 22:49

Breast feeding fine. But I really wouldn't want to watch someone expressing.

FlibbertyGiblets · 31/01/2019 22:57

Eyes are amazing things, you know. They can swivel at will. Who knew?

Fazackerley · 01/02/2019 10:02

I remember those breast pump days, not fondly. I'd definitely be wincing over my latte.

BoxOfBabyCheeses · 01/02/2019 10:05

I'm all for breastfeeding when and where needed, but a breast pump is a different thing altogether. I happily breastfed in front of friends and family, but I wouldn't have dreamed of pumping in front of anyone but my ex at the time.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2019 10:06

Well unless they are sat at your table, top off and pumping full whack, why would you watch? Don't be so weird and rude.

I can't open the article, so was this a staff member sat in the middle of the cafe?

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2019 10:08

Do people feel different about pumping because it's considered a "voice" to pump then bottle feed rather than just breast feed, or because its not "natural"?

Fazackerley · 01/02/2019 10:08

It's pretty weird and rude to assume a load of randoms are happy to watch you pump milk when they've only sat down for a latte.

This is one to file under Not Everything is About You

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2019 10:13

Why are you all watching??? It's so weird to sit and watch anyone else in a cafe. Just STOP STARING

SummerGems · 01/02/2019 10:18

There’s a difference between breastfeeding and expressing.

Breastfeeding in public - crack on and do whatever.

Expressing in public just isn’t appropriate under any circumstances. Express at home if you’re expressing. There is 100% no need to be doing so in a cafe. Fgs.

Charlieiscool · 01/02/2019 10:22

Breastfeeding anywhere is fine but there is no need to get the machinery out all over the place in a restaurant.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2019 10:24

Why? Why is pumping so different?

Aquilla · 01/02/2019 10:26

Really gross.

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 01/02/2019 10:31

Why is everyone so anti pumping in public?!

What’s the difference between pumping and breastfeeding?

What if you can’t bf and decide to exclusively express (which is the worst of all worlds and generally only done by the truly desperate)

Should a woman who’s exclusively pumping shut herself away for six months then, lest she offend anyone ?

Haven’t read the news story btw

ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/02/2019 10:31

She was completely covered. It would be different if she was just sat there topless, but she was covered. Sounds like the customer worked herself up into a fit over it simply because she knew it was happening. There's a difference between knowing and seeing and she couldn't see anything so it doesn't affect anyone.

TheLostTargaryen · 01/02/2019 10:31

How silly are some of these replies! It is entirely possible that the cafe consisted of a kitchen/food prep area, dining area and toilets. She sat in a corner all covered up. I would not pump in a bathroom or sat on the floor of a kitchen.
As for expressing at home only? Anyone who's ever breastfed will know that you still produce milk when not with the baby and expressing whilst away for hours on end is the best option.

Samcro · 01/02/2019 10:38

bit of a non story, but a free advert.

TheFaerieQueene · 01/02/2019 10:40

What is wrong with her expressing in public? She wouldn’t have been doing it for shits and giggles. What is wrong with some people ?

Sizeofalentil · 01/02/2019 10:44

@summergems - the woman worked there so was pumping milk for her baby who was presumably elsewhere

PerfectPeony · 01/02/2019 10:46

Oh come on! How silly. The whole idea of expressing is that you’re not at home or your boobs are filling up because your baby isn’t with you.

Good for her that she feels comfortable expressing out and about. The more we see it the more people will choose to breastfeed, which is great imo.

Sizeofalentil · 01/02/2019 10:57

It's not really a massive deal tbh. I have to express at a meeting room at work which is fairly stressful, so kudos to her for not getting stage fright and actually being able to do it in public
