I don't really want to say anything in particular as everyone has their own views on GB and the government.

It just felt odd that their wasn't a specific thread on what, by anyone's account, is a momentous day; a new PM. That's all.

Oh yes, sooo many mama's this way and that, left and right. Some are speedy and some are at home and some are lulu.

"That's why, constitutionally, there was no need for a general election either now or in 1990. "

Erm... what constitution?

I hate Gordon Brown. This is a sad day for Britain indeed.

TheMuppet · 27/06/2007 15:58

SM I hate politics TBH but try to keep upto date as they have a say in the running of our lifes (as such).
and History can i just watch history channel???

speedymama · 27/06/2007 15:58

Gordon went to university at 16yo. He has a formidable brain. There is no fluff about him.

ahundredtimes · 27/06/2007 15:58

I'll debate his merits if you like.

policywonk · 27/06/2007 15:58

I think I'm with Muppet on this one. I know that factually we're supposed to be voting for constituency MPs, but the truth of the matter is that our system is increasingly presidential (look how TB ignored not just parliament, but his own cabinet). It would be more democratic to hold an election. Esp as TB promised he would be serving the whole term just before the last election.

CatIsSleepy · 27/06/2007 15:59

thought you might X100
keep it clean, mind...

CatIsSleepy · 27/06/2007 16:00

elections are v. expensive and a big palaver. am sure most people who voted labour last time assumed GB would be taking over whatever TB said.

TheMuppet · 27/06/2007 16:00

Thanks PW - we may still have a labour government but i'd like sum say who runs the country, as GB done budget for all these yrs i just feel its going to get worse.

speedymama · 27/06/2007 16:01

Policywonk, I think you'll find that the President Mantle first went to Thatcher. She took no notice of her cabinet. In fact, she even elevated herself to the monarchy (we are a grandmother.....)

TheMuppet · 27/06/2007 16:01

CIS - 10yrs ago i wasn't old enough to vote!

CatIsSleepy · 27/06/2007 16:02

I mean last election TM-was not 10 years ago.
also i think GB has done good job with economy.

policywonk · 27/06/2007 16:03

Oh, I'd overhaul the whole lot. PR, fixed terms, written constitution...

TheMuppet · 27/06/2007 16:03

the last election i voted Tory

CatIsSleepy · 27/06/2007 16:03

last election was 2004 or 5? can't actually remember!

TheMuppet · 27/06/2007 16:04

CIS - economy may have improved but i feel i'm struggling more for money now, and i work 30hrs a week and once paid bills etc have hardly a penny left still scrapping by and i hate it

speedymama · 27/06/2007 16:04

2005

CatIsSleepy · 27/06/2007 16:06

am sorry about that TM. it's shite struggling for money. but do you think you'd be better off under the tories? i doubt it.

homemama · 27/06/2007 16:06

Well I'm chuffed that at least a few of you answered my thread. Thought I'd be hounded!

The Tories will try and cut the minimum wage as soon as they get in.

TheMuppet · 27/06/2007 16:07

Makes me wonder why i do work as may be better off on benefits but don't want to be put into that sterotype its not me, Labour are encouraging mothers to go back to work but i feel worse off

homemama · 27/06/2007 16:08

TM, hand on heart I genuinely believe that GB is one of the few MPs who really believes in the eradication of poverty. Whether he can/will sort it out remains to be seen.

HM - maybe but i don't see how when he's been in charge of budget for last 10yrs? how is being PM going to make any difference i feel i'm going to be scraping the breadline even more now

CatIsSleepy · 27/06/2007 16:11

i hope you're right hm.
and i'm with speedymama on the tories and the min wage-they'd do it if they dared i'll bet. i don't trust cameron and his crew. a lot of smooth talk but same old nastiness underneath. they don't give a toss about people struggling to get by.

homemama · 27/06/2007 16:11

TM, I've just read Polly Toynbee's, Hard Work; Life in low pay Britain in which she goes to great lengths to explain that most people would rather work hard for little money that claim benefits. GB really does need to make a difference to mums like you if he wants my vote at the next election.
