A woman and her ex-partner who strapped a toddler face down in a "monstrous cage bed" have each been given 10 years behind bars.

Ellie-May Minshull-Coyle was 19 months old when she died after being restrained in Preston in March 2017.

Her mother Lauren Coyle, 19, and stepfather Reece Hitchcott, 20, were both convicted of causing or allowing her death.

At Liverpool Crown Court, the pair were sentenced to 10 years in youth custody.

A young mum who left her baby girl to die sent text messages to her partner saying that her daughter was 'banging her head against the wall,' a court heard.

Ellie-May Minshull-Coyle , aged 19 months, was tied to the mattress of her bed with tight ligatures across her chest and legs and a duvet placed over her, a jury at Liverpool Crown Court was told yesterday.

Her bedroom had been transformed into a 'monstrous cage' and the window had been blocked with a mattress and there were no lights, the court heard.

Ellie-May's mum Lauren Coyle, 19 and her boyfriend Reece Hitchcott, 20, were cleared of manslaughter by a jury at Liverpool Crown Court.

But after almost seven-and-a-half hours of deliberations, the jury found the pair guilty of causing or allowing her death, one count of child cruelty by "caging" the child in her bed, and another count of child cruelty by restraining her in the bed.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Alison Armour, a Home Office consultant forensic pathologist, concluded the child's death was caused by "forcible restraint by ligatures in a face-down position complicated by hyperthermia".

Coyle replied: "Can't be arsed with it anymore you ower money now pay it "

Coyle soon began to complain to her boyfriend that Ellie-May was keeping her awake at night.

Her text read: "Ellie keeps waking up have to take in living room dont want to go to bed yet."

Coyle often messaged her boyfriend while he was at work, the court heard.

On one occasion Hitchcott sent her a message which read: "I love you baby this one of the ways it will teach her slowly that she needs to sleep on her own."

On February 7 2017 Coyle posted a message on her Facebook page which read: "Finally got my little princess in a routine in her big bed. She is growing up far too fast."

Coyle sent a message to Hitchcott which read: "Stressed with Ellie. She was biting me so I put her in her room. She is banging her head off the walls. I have smacked her loads too.

Hitchcott replied: "I will sort her out when I come home. I will put her in her room."

On another occasion Coyle sent a text to her boyfriend which read: "There she goes ahead banging her f*ing head again."

On March 20 Coyle sent a message to Hitchcott which read: "Ellie playing up again shoved her in her room."

Hitchcott replied: "She will behave when I am home ha ha."

Mr Tehrani also told the court that Ellie-May's medical condition deteriorated in the months leading up to her death.

The toddler suffered from vomiting and diarrhea, and a doctor said that she was suffering from gastroenteritis.

Since I read about this on the BBC’s website yesterday it has haunted me. That poor little girl, such horrendous cruelty to do that to her, it makes me despair. And smacking a 19 month old repeatedly as a solution to get her to sleep!? Oh my goodness I can’t even. The selfishness of some people is limitless.

BarbarianMum · 17/11/2018 13:39

Children's lives are really not valued by society, are they? Sad

BarbarianMum · 17/11/2018 13:41

And no parenting does not need to be taught in school. These "parents" had plenty of good advice, they ignored it because they didn't want to be bothered.

Santaispolishinghissleigh · 17/11/2018 13:48

It haunted me all during the night, felt sick, wishing I hadn't clicked the article that showed a picture of her. Beautiful baby girl.
I hope the prison officers turn a blind eye to what they deserve inside . Maybe tie them to their beds the entire sentence?
One example of why hanging should be brought back imo.
Or a slow death fed to a comodo dragon maybe?

Thesearmsofmine · 17/11/2018 13:51

That made me feel sick, that poor little girl.

Flashingbeacon · 17/11/2018 15:03

I don’t think parenting needs taught in schools. How could a teacher say “now boys and girls, when you’re the sole career for a tiny child don’t hit them, don’t TIE THEM DOWN, and don’t turn their bedroom into a dungeon, that won’t help them sleep”. Kids need to be taught right from wrong but if theu shouldn’t need to specify not to hit babies.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/11/2018 15:20

I don’t think education would do much in these kinds of cases. These people knew what they were doing was wrong, they had been given good advice about sleeping (according to the bbc article) from her parents.

TheCraicDealer · 17/11/2018 16:12

After reading this I honestly do think there's a case to be made for sterilisation in cases of serious child abuse or neglect. These people are young enough to have more kids when they get out and they're a serious danger to any child left in their care. Bad enough leaving her tied to a bed, but face down? With a duvet over her? It's fucking outrageous that they've been let off with effectively a slap on the wrist when it was clearly a highly dangerous and cruel set up.

PawneeParksDept · 17/11/2018 16:20

They should have got life. They are the reason she's dead. 😡

leccybill · 17/11/2018 16:27

As someone battling 8 years of secondary infertility, it makes my blood boil when I hear about child cruelty and neglect.
Yes, parenting is a slog, yes you have to stop putting yourself first, yes it can be tiring - but these are things you weigh up before you decide if you want to have children.
I hope the pair of them rot.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/11/2018 19:45

10 years aka 3.5-5 years. If it were up to me I'd throw the key away.
This Yet another example of our joke of a justice system. Other Countries must laugh at us.

cptartapp · 21/11/2018 19:57

I live in Preston. Hadn't heard about this until now. Absolutely awful.

Jayfee · 21/11/2018 20:04

Out in 5 years!! Why youth custody not prison??

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/11/2018 20:07

How true it is I don't know. However I don't think they get sent to an adult prison until they're 21.

bobstersmum · 21/11/2018 20:10

My dd is almost exactly this age. And she's a terrible sleeper, I can't for the life of me imagine doing anything like this and thinking it's ok! That poor poor baby must have cried and screamed and been so scared! Breaks my heart to think of that poor child. Rip Ellie. I hope the so called parents rot.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/11/2018 20:10

Should have got life. I read a newspaper report that they had received ‘good advice’ from grandparents but ignored it.

Why do idiots like this have babies? They don’t have the brains to look after themselves, the selfish stupid bastards.

I’m so angry and disgusted by this story. There’s a special place in hell for child murderers.

RainbowsArePretty · 21/11/2018 20:12

So awful. Poor child had an awful life & died because of the. 10 years is nit an appropriate sentence

Flashingbeacon · 21/11/2018 22:01

Forever more this case is going to be my reference when people are claiming ss have a vendetta and they’re doing nothing wrong. That Facebook message about their princess is chilling. So apart from reality.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 21/11/2018 23:13

They strike me as being a very immature, ignorant pair of imbeciles with no idea about parenting.

I don't think they were purposely trying to hurt the child though - they were struggling with the child's behaviour. They needed to get advise and support - not tie her up or hit her. Too thick to be parents.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 21/11/2018 23:16

Sorry, just read they had been given support and advice from hw and gps - they ignored it and built the cage.

Flashingbeacon · 21/11/2018 23:18

I don’t think that’s an excuse. I know a woman with learning difficulties, low iq who had a baby. Shes definitely immature and inexperienced, big question about how the situation came about but she keeps her child safe. My great gran had her first kid at 14, she was immature and without support. I can’t see it as a natural extension to abuse so extreme it results in death. Even tying up at all, that’s so dangerous I can’t imagine how you get into tht head space.

colouringinpro · 21/11/2018 23:20

That poor, poor child RIP

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 21/11/2018 23:26

Autistic beds are like padded cages and I wonder if this was the idea behind the cage.

Tying her face down so she can't bang her head on the wall or get out of bed..... WTF!

I think they both need sterilising.

drinkswineoutofamug · 21/11/2018 23:29

My daughter, when in prison would sit and watch the news to see who may be coming in....
Prisoners hate child murderers, sex offenders , rapist.
They are going to find out what hell is. But even this will be too good for them.

Haworthia · 21/11/2018 23:47

The worst thing is, I can imagine there’s a lot of young, undereducated, badly parented young people out there doing similar things to their babies - the only difference being their children haven’t died.
