"Climate sceptics in the UK have been asking why Britons should switch off lights, turn down central heating and avoid foreign flights in order to save carbon when the Chinese are increasing emissions at their current a rate. "

Does this worry you? Should something be done about it on a global scale? And who should be doing what?

So, no one is interested in a good carbon emissions discussion?

I heard a good interview earlier about this on Radio.
And good points were made, like, the reasons why Britons emissions are in the big picturelooking seemingly low has more to do with the small size of this country, but that the average Britons Carbon emissions are higher then teh average chinese one, etc....!
I think it is a global issue, obviously, and therefore we all should try as hard as we can.
But on the other hand people in those countries also have the same right to a better life as we have.

Yes, but they done need to be so careless in the technology they choose when building a power plant. They could use Clean Col Technology. They could build Nuclear Power plant. There are options. But they are not interested because they would be more expensive.

The Chinese are being a bit reckless with the coal power plants frenzy (2 plants a week -- that is huge).

Don't worry, the Chinese economy will collapse soon taking all their stinking coal power stations with it. Far too corrupt, too much governmental secrecy, and too closed to freedom and openess to truely compete in a global economy (plus something like 2 thirds of the country are illiterate). Of course the damage might be done by then.

My belief has always been to add your light to the sum of light. I can't control what others do, but I carry on turning lights off, turning the heating down and not using too much water in the hope that one day others will too (I'm no angel though, still got my car )

Eleusis, I must admit, I don't know enough about it all to know if those other ways are a viable option in their situation.
Also, would more Nuclear Power stations really be such an apealing thought....now, I do realise that whatever there is of nuclear powerstations they are probably better of being used, but would building more of them really be that much better then the coal version? Like I said, I don't know enough about it!

I agree that we all have to do our bit and then at least we can preach to others to cut down. As for China - stop buying cheap crap Chinese goods and there will be less carbon emmissions. The Chinese economy is fueled solely by the Western world's seemingly insatiable appetite for shite.

TwoIfBySea · 20/06/2007 20:27

Yes it does worry me.

But so does the fact that while we are getting nagged and taxed to become greener I see business properties lit up like Christmas trees all the time, throwing away tons of recyclable material and no one says anything about that.

Eleusis · 20/06/2007 21:41

Thaat's because green taxes are nothing but an excuse to generate revenue.

Callisto, that was another point raised in the Interview I listened too!

Another thing though, made me giggle to think that now Britain is someone to look up too and aspire too in things recycling and being green...imo Britain still has got a long long way to go...compared to Germany forinstance...hm....
