Frightening stuff. This idea that people get 'taken out' for their words.

I can't imagine a positive ending to this but I hope I'm wrong.

All I've read on this is that he is a dissident journalist and disappeared from a Saudi embassy in turkey.

I think he’s most likely been assassinated. Its what his closest friends think has happened. Heinous regime.

SouthWestmom · 11/10/2018 19:16

I think so too - the info about the assassins flying in and out.

Isn't it terrifying though, that words are so powerful they have to be silenced?

OP posts:
Poisondartfrog · 11/10/2018 19:28

It IS terrifying. And happening under so many regimes.

NoLogicInThis · 17/10/2018 22:41

Can someone please tell me why it's likely this man was killed?
There are reports he has been killed
Had he said something about Saudi Arabia and that's why?
Have I got this right he was a Saudi Arabian journalist but worked in America.
He visited a Saudi consul in Turkey but he was killed.
What has Donald Trump got to do with it?

ViserionTheDragon · 17/10/2018 23:00

He knew that the Saudi royal family and others in the KSA have links with Al-Quaeda and other terrorist organizations. He knew of other monstrosities going on within the KSA and was going to tell the world about it, except they got to him first. Bear in mind that the UK and the US do supply arms to the Saudis and by calling them 'friends' of the West, they are allowing them to perpetuate their horrible regime. Trump is quite right to put international pressure on them.

ViserionTheDragon · 17/10/2018 23:03

OP, all we can hope is that the world learns the truth and that justice will be done for him. But that's too optimistic I guess, the Saudis have literally gotten away with murder Sad.

SylviaAndSidney · 17/10/2018 23:05

This is absolutely awful.

VenusInSpurs · 17/10/2018 23:16

“Isn't it terrifying though, that words are so powerful they have to be silenced?”

I find it a string reminder of the value and power of free speech. Throughout history and under almost every regime people have lost their lives for speaking out.
The Saudi jails are full of writers, bloggers, journalists, beheadings and other executions for speaking out are almost routine. The only difference here is that they did it on someone else’s spill. Much like tne russians did to Litvenenko and the Skripals. Putin’s regime assassinates people ... we buy our oil, we buy our gas, we sell our arms..,

SouthWestmom · 18/10/2018 08:54

I think it's just so shocking. That lives can be ended with no trial, no warning, just this power some states and individuals have. In a few weeks he will be forgotten by most people.

It's like the kid in N K - Oscar. His story really really upsets me and yet life goes on.

Maybe I need to join Amnesty International and feel like I'm doing something.

Very sad news tonight/this morning. Thoughts are with his family and friends. I hope they get justice but sadly I think it's unlikely.

Antigon · 20/10/2018 03:13

Doesn't sound like it was in the USA's and the UK's interests for his truth to come out either.

I wouldn't be surprised if other governments are in bed with KSA.

florenceheadache · 20/10/2018 03:51

It’s not in Turkeys interest either as it makes it obvious that spying goes on within the embassies.

ViserionTheDragon · 20/10/2018 22:12

My thoughts are also with his family, fiancee and colleagues. The Saudis couldn't really explain it otherwise, could they?

OP, you got me thinking about working for an organization like Amnesty, I will be returning to work at some point when DS goes to nursery, I think it would be a rewarding job/career.

YY to above comments regarding other countries and Turkey. Jamal Khassoggi's death opens up a Pandora's box of issues. The USA and UK do hundreds of billions worth of trade with the Saudis. London is also a popular summer holiday destination for them too, they spend millions in Selfridge, Harrods, etc. What would we do if we stopped all trade with them? How would our government make up for the shortfall in the billions lost?

Germany has put an embargo on selling arms to the Saudis. At least Merkel has some morals, I admire her for that.

SouthWestmom · 20/10/2018 22:17

I work for a charity now. I'm thinking, like you, that maybe I should look at AI as a future career.

I find it shocking that life is worth less than arms deals, economics, politics etc . That a man in pursuit of the truth should be killed for his quest. A 'fist fight' fgs what a crap outcome. As if embassy staff would be so unskilled as to end up killing someone in a scuffle.

OP posts:
MinorRSole · 20/10/2018 22:44

Ah but trump finds the explanation credible - so that's alright then. I can't begin to imagine what his loved ones are going through in all of this, or indeed what he went through himself.

SouthWestmom · 20/10/2018 22:56

Don't. Credible how? Just ridiculous

OP posts:
qate · 22/10/2018 21:50

Frankly astounding case, and I'm amazed there hasn't been more on it on here given how horrifying and blatant it is. Sadly not sure that we'll ever get to the bottom of it, or that the parties ultimately responsible will ever be held to account.

MinorRSole · 22/10/2018 22:00

I was thinking the same, can't believe it hasn't been in active threads. In real life people are talking about it loads (as expected)

PierreBezukov · 22/10/2018 22:06

I'm surprised you OP and others are so shocked - dozens of journalists are murdered every year, and hundreds more imprisoned in regimes including Turkey and Russia. Free speech is under threat worldwide, including in the 'free world'

Trump is very anti-media and is working to undermine free speech in America.

In authoritarian regimes, journalists are a constant target.

SouthWestmom · 22/10/2018 22:21

Yes but so brazen. That's the shocking part for me - that they do it so obviously and with no attempt at subterfuge (to start with)
