Some atheletes need to learn to graciously

Did anybody else watch the heptathalon and marathon? I was dipping in and out to watch the progress of each. Denise Lewis dropped out when she realised that she was no longer a medal contender and Paula Radcliffe dropped out "due to heat exhaustion" when she only had 3 miles left to run. Why? In the marathon,if the "lesser" runners could continue and finish, why couldn't she? After all, PR is a champion and would have trained very hard for this. Everybody knew that Athens was hot and for commentators to imply that the heat was too much for her was in my mind, making excuses. PR is a phenomenal athelete and I think she has let herself down by dropping out of the race when she only had 3 miles to go. DL is also a great champion and initially I thought she had a injury but it turns out that she lost all hope in winning.

I have never been a champion of anything so I cannot appreciate the mental anguish that these people endure when they know they are going to lose but they should take note of a true champion like the Ethiopian, Haile Gebrselassie. He was 2 times Olympic champion of the 10,000 race. He was aiming for a 3rd gold medal but in the end he came 5th, still a good position. He did not drop out when the going got tough. Champions win races but they also accept defeat graciously.

lol enid at paula doing a gf style thread!

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:15

enid - I am imagining she dropped out because every last ounze of hope she had left her body. She was probably so physically exhausted anyway that her menatl capacity was all that had kept her going up to that point.
I wonder if you have ever been in Athens in August? It is seriousy hot. Even the Greeks leave Athens is August so I really don't understand why a Games was held in Athens in August anyway - completely daft!

enid · 23/08/2004 13:21

No, I have never been to Athens in August!

mckenzie · 23/08/2004 13:21

Interestingly, when Haile Gebrselassie was interviewed earlier this year about possibly retiring from the track and doing marathons instead he said that there was no way he would do Athens because of the heat!!

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:26

Thanks mckenzie - I rest my case

lou33 · 23/08/2004 13:28

Atens in August is unbearable, even with fans directed straight at you.

enid · 23/08/2004 13:28

Well some of them managed to blooming well get round!!

This will definitely be my last post on this matter. I thought that the American who came 3rd in the Marathon was brilliant. She was way behind the leading pack but she kept working hard and eventually overtook the Ethiopian. According to some of the comments on this messageboard, one would have thought that the Ethiopian would have prevailed over the American because she is more use to those searing temperatures. The American put on a display that demonstrated that if you are determined enough, who can achieve beyond your expectations. She was delighted with her bronze medal .

There have been other comments about DL being injured. Well, she won her gold medal in Sydney with a heavily bandaged thigh (or was it a leg). She had contemplated pulling out but did not and went on to win gold. I think the difference this time was probably more mental than physical.

Yes, she was great wasn't she?

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:33

I don't think you undertand enid. Paula Radcliffe went out to win. She was very nervous, she had trained very very hard, she wins from in front and she threw everything she had at it to do that. She had NOTHING left!!!
It's a matter of attitude, I bet most of others just wanted to get round so therefore had a different game plan.

enid · 23/08/2004 13:34

I do understand - I understand that we didn't win a blooming medal!!

What can I say, I'm competitive me

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:35

Oh dear. I can't believe I am letting this thread wind me up. Why can't I accept the fact some people just don't undertstand?......

enid · 23/08/2004 13:36

god - don't get me started on Tim Henman

notthecod · 23/08/2004 13:36

and if she had wona nd sowmeone else moaned about the heat we would have thought they were real slackers

bran · 23/08/2004 13:38

I'm just going to say this and then duck for cover.

Judging by the comments of people in rl about Paula, it's obvious to me that the negative people are over-whelmingly the sort who would never be in any kind of athletic competition, the kind of people who whinge if they have to make a second trip down-stairs because they forgot something. Whereas people who have actually run in marathons, or who take part in the kind of sport that needs a commitment to training etc are extremely sympathetic to Paula.

Of course I could be wrong, afterall I don't know the real names of people here, perhaps the negative people here are in fact posting from the Olympic village , but I suspect that school sports day is as far as their athletics career has gone.

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:38

No we would have thought " it's amazing that she won in such impossible conditions!"

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:39

antway we do understand - we dont agree!

MrsDoolittle · 23/08/2004 13:44

I think you are missing the point notthecod. I don't that's the issue here.

KateandtheGirls · 23/08/2004 13:49

I saw a brief report on the women's marathon on the Olympic coverage here in the US. I was very dissapointed to see that PR had dropped out, but it never occurred to me that it had been anything other than sheer exhaustion and she gave it her all but couldn't finish. The tv commentators certainly made it sound that way.
