Couple die on same day in same hotel. How?

I just think this is awful. I can't link to it on this phone but it is in the news today. The couples poor daughter found her dad near death and he died still in the hotel room. Her mum died a few hours later.

Egyptian Authorites have called it a natural death of an old English man and his wife who they say died of "grief ". Which cannot be true and Thomas Cook are now moving all their guests from the hotel.

I have been to Egypt and the health and safety is much different to that in the UK but I find it shocking that this is potentially being covered up to save tourism. Other guests are saying they have suffered awful food poisoning and others suspect carbon monoxide. Either way I feel very sorry for the couple's daughter and hope she gets to the bottom of what happenned to her parents

sky news has this

The local governor's office has said the cause of Mr Cooper's death was "a sudden stoppage of the heart muscles and respiratory failure", while his wife - who worked for Thomas Cook - died due to "a stoppage of circulation and respiratory failure".

which sounds like cardiac arrest, but it has also been repited as respiratory failure now as well and heart failure. All sounds a bit woolly.

Keel · 24/08/2018 23:02

My husband is a plumber and said it sounds like legionnaires and sadly the disease causes heart attacks in otherwise healthy people. It's so tragic. Really feel for the poor daughter.

Keel · 24/08/2018 23:04

Sorry should say cardiac arrest.

Sar51 · 24/08/2018 23:09

I seem to remember hearing a really sad story about some children who died of carbon monoxide poisoning when they were on holiday a few years ago. I’m wondering if that’s what happened in this indtance.

aperolspritzplease · 24/08/2018 23:24

I think cardiac arrest for the man and she went into shock and arrested if not CO.

Horrible situation for the family whatever.

Knuts13 · 25/08/2018 00:05

Death from Botulism is from respiratory failure.
I have been to this Hotel 3 or 4 years ago and although it is an amazing hotel my husband was the worst he has ever been with food poisoning- so we never went back.

NaToth · 25/08/2018 09:23

Another vote for botulism here.

They were apparently fine when they went to bed the night before and I can5 think of anything else that would result in death from respiratory failure so quickly.

Absolutely traumatic for the daughter and grandchildren.

The statements from Egypt are awful... and old/elderly man. He was in his sixties, definitely not elderly in my book! So sad.

TomHardysNextWife · 25/08/2018 10:14

I can't even begin to imagine what the poor daughter is going through. I really hope that the British Embassy are supporting her and trying to get them all home.

As for the other tourists at the hotel, who in their right mind would want to stay there after that had happened and no investigation........ the mind truly boggles at the mentality of some people.

leccybill · 25/08/2018 11:24

Yes I hope the consulate have stepped in and can get this family home with dignity.
An autopsy in the UK is needed.

MarthasGinYard · 25/08/2018 11:32

Something not right with this

megletthesecond · 25/08/2018 11:36

I assumed it was carbon monoxide poisoning.

NewUserNameTime · 25/08/2018 11:39

So sad

misspops · 25/08/2018 11:44

Either Co2 poisoning or severe food poisoning would be my guest.
I wouldn’t holiday in Egypt or similar countries in the height of summer. Too many health risks, flies/wildlife around the food, food not stored correctly at Times, etc. Numerous people I know get ill whenever they go - my healthy sister ended up in hospital for 3 days when she went to Sharm with FP. Such a sad story. I wonder if the daughter managed to ask her mum what their symptoms where before she sadly passed ?

www.steigenberger.com/en/hotels/all-hotels/egypt/hurghada/steigenberger-aqua-magic

According to the blurb, there are tea and coffee making facilities.

It's a hotel with no self catering facilities apparently.

All I can think of is Legionaires Disease.

Underlying, undiagnosed heart condition?

Sudden death after bad news is possible, if the poor lady was unwell as well as her husband, this would be more than possible.

Legionella can show up at the best run establishment

Carbon monoxide poisoning is highly unlikely.

Horrible story.

MissEliza · 25/08/2018 22:26

This is awful. Their daughter must be in bits. The family deserve answers but I fear they won't get any. The statements from the Egyptian authorities are pathetic but not surprising. I lived there for several years and find the authorities have a total disregard for basic health and safety. Any decent government would want to find a cause to prevent it happening again. They just don't care. They think they can just sweep things under the carpet and move on. Thomas Cook should be looking to redeem itself after the death of those poor children in Corfu and put pressure.

This is an awful story. We stayed at this hotel 18 months ago and it's an all inclusive hotel so no kitchens or stoves in the rooms. We weren't ill when there and thought it was an excellent hotel. We go to Egypt often and this was one of the better hotels for cleanliness etc.

I hope the poor daughter and grandchildren get some answers Sad.
