did anyone see unreported world on channel 4 tonight about the country's collapse and Mugabe's genocide of the urban poor? It seems to be getting worse...those poor children looking after their families of brothers and sisters as their parents have died (Mugabe is controlling access to AIds drugs)...and one heartbreaking child I cannot forget who shuffled towards the hidden camera from a shack with a swollen malnourished belly and stick thin legs. His eyes were dead.

I could post this on the tv board but they are all talking about BB. I have googled a CAmbridge charity who sponsors children in Zimbabwe. Does anyone knoe if they can still operate? here

as far as I'm aware the SOS Villages in Zimbabwe and still running - the two that I know of are SOS Waterfalls (in Harare - which incidently it where I watched Princess Diana's funeral from!) and Bindura north of Harare in the rural areas - I think there's also one in the south of the country in Bulawayo.

SOSVillages are most definitely still opertational around the world so definitely worth contacting them and asking about the Zimbabwean ones.

It breaks my heart to see what's happening there - inflation at 3700%, unemployment at over 80%, 1/4 of the population infected with HIV.............

madamenoir, haven't seen the report myself but know from DH's family over there it is a living nightmare. They have fled and have been in S. Africa for the last couple of years, before it got really really bad. They are fortunate and could get out the majority are not so lucky. Mugabe is a tyrant and needs to be tried for genocide.

I am not sure what charities are still operating over there, very few I would suggest currently.

breaks my heart...such a beautiful country

Wallace · 18/05/2007 21:51

My dad and brother are still there

Smurfs · 18/05/2007 21:54

Wallace - how awful for you do you manage manage to keep in regular contact with your father and brother?

Wallace · 18/05/2007 21:59

Yes, not too bad. My dad is coming back to UK next week (his job there is finished) not sure if my brother will come back - he loves it there. Don't want him to be there when things go tits-up (for want of a better expression)

It hasn't been to bad for them because they are lucky to be priviliged whites, and my dad worked for the UN.

It is so shocking what the country has come to. I lived there as a child and it was a wondwerful place.

Wallace · 18/05/2007 22:00

sorry if that sounds awful in my last post, but it is the way things are.

Smurfs · 18/05/2007 22:07

It is such a worry when anybody you love and care for is there. DH's family are of the opinion that he will be overthrown eventually...not sure when though and they will leave the relative safety of Jo.burg and head back to what I don't know as they are farmers.

Wallace · 18/05/2007 22:09

Hopefully he will die someday

I hope your dh's family eventually get back to their country.

edam · 18/05/2007 22:09

I just can't believe S Africa is actually supporting Mugabe. I mean why on earth would anyone with a shred of humanity sustain such a monster?

Wallace · 18/05/2007 22:09

Mugabe btw

fannyannie · 18/05/2007 23:48

Wallace I feel for you - all but a tiny handful of DH's family are still in Zimbabwe (only his 2 older siblings and one or 2 cousins are out of the country) and it's a living nightmare for them.

ghosty · 18/05/2007 23:53

When the second gulf war started, the whole Bush/Blair/Saddam Hussein thing, my mother (from SA) asked why no one was doing anything about Mugabe as he was a bigger monster than Saddam Hussein ever was.

i have never understood why Mugabe's regime has gone unchecked for so long. Shameful.
