Madeleine / Brits abroad should have all their expenses paid by the Foreign Office

Been on holiday abroad for few days, so sorry if this has been covered / if I have got this wrong. The family made a statement, earlier in the week, saying they would stay in Portugal, until she was found.
It sounded as though , that was, finances allowing.
Shouldn't the British Foreign Office, support their every need, organise hotels, nannies for their other children, and everything they need, so that money was the last of their problems , in this traumatic situation.
Or am I missing somethiing major here ?

why should the british tax payer foot the bill. there is nothing they can do at the moment. i would have thought the hotel complex would have given them a complementary room buti dont think their stay should be funded.

JoolsToo · 16/05/2007 22:33

I can understand their reluctance to leave but agree with mamazon

JodieG1 · 16/05/2007 22:34

I heard on the news that Mark Warner were paying for them to stay there as long as needed.

LIZS · 16/05/2007 22:34

Aren't MW stumping up for flights , accommodation , nannies etc anyway ? Why the British Embassy ? I expect they are offering support , translators and so on to facilitate the judicial enquiry.

quietmouse · 16/05/2007 22:35

bloody hell - that's harsh mamazon

I can't think of anything so worthy of paying my taxes for tbh

SaintGeorge · 16/05/2007 22:37

Not harsh at all, just realistic.

Agree with mamazon.

PinkChick · 16/05/2007 22:38

there are lots of other worhty causes, yes, but there are lots of ways my taxes are spent which i dont agree with nor have any control over, give these and other families in desperate positions all the help they need!

paulaplumpbottom · 16/05/2007 22:38

I don't want to sound harsh but no, there are other things the british tax payer needs to pay for

Ladymuck · 16/05/2007 22:38

Dispassionately I wonder what their travel insurance covers.

But so far Mark Warner has committed to providing them with accom. etc. Presumably they are getting compassionate leave from their employers.

Oblomov · 16/05/2007 22:39

God,we can't look after our own, in their hour of need.
What the f**k am I paying my taxes forthen ?

mamazon · 16/05/2007 22:40

this will sound even more terrible but what if she is never found? like the little boy that went missing in greece over 15 years ago.

quietmouse · 16/05/2007 22:41

the way you talk about their 'stay' being funded - it sounds like they have decided to extend their break, fgs.

They have no choice but to remain there.

(I could not physically get on a plane leaving my child there. I couldn't do it)

paulaplumpbottom · 16/05/2007 22:41

They aren't the only ones in need

Ladymuck · 16/05/2007 22:41

And I don't think that finance will be the limiting factor. The family are taking the most optimistic view of the situation at present. If Madeleine isn't found then at some point the family will have to come to a decision as to how they move forward.

Oblomov · 16/05/2007 22:42

Our taxes don't go to the nhs or schools.
It goes on red tape and all sorts of stupid areas. Plus, our tax goes on our lax immigration looks after anyone who wants to come to 'Free England', yet we can't look after our own when they are abroad ?

OP posts:
quietmouse · 16/05/2007 22:43

I agree with you Oblomov

2shoeswhoismshadowsnumber1fan · 16/05/2007 22:45

mamazon has a good point

PinkChick · 16/05/2007 22:46

me too! so sad that this family are being argued over because 'they are no the only ones' and 'they shouldnt have left them'no theyre not and yes they did, but that isnt the problem right now, the problem is how to find her and make this whole trauma as simple as possible for them.
they will never forgive themselves, nor do they expect all this attention, its the press doing this, the family are just the same as you and me but have had their 4 yr old daughter abducted and have no idea where she is or even if she is still alive

Oblomov · 16/05/2007 22:46

Thank you very much quietmouse.
I didn't mean for my last statement to sound so anti-immigration.
But I do feel that as such a Superpower, that Blair makes us out to be, we should be paying for them, for our own, in their hour of need.
We can afford all sorts of other minor/silly things. We should be able to afford this.

PinkChick · 16/05/2007 22:48

example: where i live..high unemployment, high drug problem, teenage pregnancy, run dow areas.we have just had built a multi million pound..........art gallery!, that is what my taxes paid for!

mamazon · 16/05/2007 22:49

I have no objection to the british embassuy spending hundreds of thousands in an effort to find this little girl, but it is of no help to the search for her parents to be there.
i can fully understand their desire to be near her and know whats going on, but the country does not have a bottomless pit of cash

quietmouse · 16/05/2007 22:50

sorry but I really do think that is very harsh.

PinkChick · 16/05/2007 22:51

i would not leave knowing my daughter 'could' be 100 yards away in some sick bastards house and that is the 'impression' they are being given!

edam · 16/05/2007 22:53

And what about all the other people who run into trouble abroad? Should the various embassies be funding everyone? Just unworkable, I'm afraid. This family haven't made any statement complaining about a lack of support.

nappyaddict · 16/05/2007 22:54

i think someone should fund their stay. maybe their travel insurance or mark warner but if neither of those did then yes i wouldn't have a problem with my taxes paying for it.
