So a thinktank has suggested that all 25 year olds should get £10,000 to help with their problems with house prices, costs of education etc.

I think this is a rubbish idea. 2 reasons.

One, house prices are too high. This needs tackling. Giving people more money to buy houses just puts more money into the market and prices go on going up.

Second, just enabling people to pay off their student loans more quickly, or to put it another way enabling government to get more student loans paid back, does nothing to improve the quality of higher education courses or improve more equal access to them.

Thinktank also suggests this would reduce intergenerational resentment. This I don't care about. Resent me all you like, kids!

I completely agree that it's a stupid idea - a) where's the money coming from and b) what's to stop the 25 year old from spending it on booze and pissing it up the wall?

Stringofpearls · 08/05/2018 10:39

I also think it's a silly idea, I agree there are some problems but I don't think handing out money on a plate is the solution. I'm just about a millennial myself, though too old to benefit from this anyway! It's a lot of money too, a couple would get 20 thousand pounds just for being 25, however much money they have at that point. This seems crazy when some people can hardly afford to eat.

So, prop up a failing system by giving a select group a significant sum????
Bonkers.
House prices need to fall - says she with a house worth what she bought it for in 2007.
Uni education needs to be subsided.
But not by giving a lump sum to a small sliver of the population.

Frosty66612 · 08/05/2018 10:51

I don’t think it’s a good idea as what about the people who will have just missed the cut off for eligibility (26 year olds plus). Do they just have to miss out on any help and have to carry on struggling to ever get on the property ladder?!

Felicity556 · 08/05/2018 13:19

I'd like to be given 10K so that I can put my feet up for a couple of yrs, hence it's a great idea! Where do I sign up?

3luckystars · 08/05/2018 16:18

Worst idea ever.

Everyone should be treated equally.

If they can’t give it to everyone then should give it to nobody. This is a load of shite.

Felicity556 · 08/05/2018 16:48

sounds like Corbyn talk to me

Kpo58 · 09/05/2018 00:23

Why is a single person at 25 more in need of the money than a mother of 2 at 20 who cannot afford a rent deposit on somewhere to live?

Flutist · 09/05/2018 00:25

Imo all that will happen is that starter homes will go up by £10k.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 09/05/2018 00:32

Make shared ownership more accessible then the government retains the money although it is long term investment as a charge on the house. Better than just giving random money out because a person passes GO and so collects money.

SwedishEdith · 09/05/2018 00:40

It's an interesting idea. Generally, if you give money to poorer people, they spend it whilst richer ones just save/offshore it.

Browsing old threads....

Balloon. Isn’t this what we did with bankers after the financial crisis?
