Cos we can all afford Sainsbury’s prices can’t we? Eeeeek.

Will they get away with it from the monopolies commission point of view? A level Economics was a v long time ago, but I thought there were things in place to prevent massive superpowers dominating.

BewareOfDragons · 28/04/2018 22:05

I won't shop at Asda out of principle; Walmart-owned and they have taken the absolute piss back in the states. Low wages, anti-union, treat their staff poorly by most accounts

Undercoverbanana · 29/04/2018 07:34

Asda were brilliant as an employer when DS worked for them. Gave him time off for his A levels and gave him loads of hours until he went to uni and then kept in touch so he could work when he was back from uni in the holidays. They gave him extra responsibilities and pay enhancements and it did him loads of good. He loved it.

I'm interested to see what it will be like. I am a mainly Sainsburys shopper especially for fresh food. However I do visit Asda to stock up on branded cupboard stuff cheaper. Hate tesco so that's not an option!

Slartybartfast · 29/04/2018 07:47

Apparently they get away with the monopoly side of things because Tesco bought Bookers.

Slartybartfast · 29/04/2018 07:47

Its a shame Walmart are still involved.

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 29/04/2018 07:56

Oh no, Asda is crap, own products are awful, stores always look a mess. Sainsbury’s quality I find is much better, generally as good as Waitrose and choice way better. Our local store always looks clean and well organised. Hopefully a merge will raising Asda to Sainsbury’s level of quality not the other way around.

PeonyTruffle · 29/04/2018 08:08

I shop at Sainsbury’s (mainly for the nectar points) but have recently switched to Lidl and I’m really impressed, saved so much money.

I’m not sure how well supposedly high end Sainsburys will merge with lower end Asda successfully? Seems a really odd combination to me

Ifailed · 29/04/2018 08:11

Both the current and previous CEO of Sainsbury's used to work at Asda, and both bought in job cuts, benefit reduction and hour changes for store staff, I think you can guess which way things will go if they do merge.

FreeMantle · 29/04/2018 08:12

toomany Strange. Our stores are the complete opposite.
Absoultuely hate the Sainsburys very bright, sterile stores that sell one version of everything at inflated prices. Food shopping for people that like neither.
Asda have the best own brand baked beans ever. Waitrose are hard and have black bits, Tesco had odd aftertaste but ASDA are amazing. I am stocking up before they ruin them.

DuchyDuke · 29/04/2018 08:15

In Indian / Pakistani areas, Sainsburys has a higher range of vegetarian / vegan and halal foods and better offers on rice and wholemeal flour. I really hope this continues

Justabadwife · 29/04/2018 08:19

It seems like an odd combination. I shop at Sainsbury's because I love the fresh food. I used to shop at asda, but I was finding all the food went off quickly. So I hope we don't end up with some 'in the middle, let's try to please everyone, but actually end up pleasing no one' scenario.

foxessocks · 29/04/2018 08:27

I've recently swapped from Sainsbury's to Asda. I want to do an online shop so Aldi and Lidl are out and Sainsbury's was getting too expensive for me. I've saved a considerable amount switching to Asda and we have found the quality good on the whole, no different to Sainsbury's to be honest. Round here , I find Morrisons is the more run down looking place and the quality not so good. I guess it really varies from place to place.

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 29/04/2018 08:44

Freemantle - I guess sometimes it depends on individual stores - our Sainsbury’s is a big superstore and has so much choice including loads of international options. The two Asda stores nearest me are similar size and choice is not that bad (not as good at the Sainsbury’s) but quality is crap and both are grubby. Can’t comment on own brand beans as I only like Heinz 😬 I was thinking of own brand pizzas, yoghurts, soups, salads, cereals, ready meals, ice creams, puddings. I know Sainsbury’s are more expensive but I am happy to pay a little extra for better quality and choice.

Slartybartfast · 29/04/2018 09:36

I dont spose it would effect the individual shops.
i prefer asda for value for money.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 29/04/2018 09:39

That is strangely shocking! Never saw this coming, not even a rumour!

AutoFilled · 29/04/2018 09:40

I don’t get the merger either. I’m a waitrose shopper but like sainsbury. It’s pleasant to shop in and have nice stuff. I can’t stand asda at all. I hope they aren’t going to turn Sainsbury’s into Asdas.

MarshaBradyo · 29/04/2018 09:43

I’m not surprised Asda is struggling

I hope Sainsbury’s remains separate, bad quality would be depressing

If they let it happen that is, In a different field Three tried to buy O2 but they weren’t allowed

FleurDelacoeur · 29/04/2018 09:50

It's an odd pairing. I'd see Asda and Morrisons as a more natural match.

We have a large Asda close to us and I don't recognise what people are saying about it being a mess or the products being dreadful. we don't have a large Sainsburys nearby, just a small "local" store which is always empty. Any time we've been in Sainsburys further afield I've found it very expensive compared to Asda/Tesco but nowhere near the quality of M&S/Waitrose.

Sainsburys are struggling more than Asda - they bought Argos which wasn't a huge success and many customers have realised that they're actually quite expensive for what you get.

Slartybartfast · 29/04/2018 09:56

I think they are all struggling because of Aldi /Lidl, however I find those prices comparable with asda

BrutusMcDogface · 29/04/2018 10:02

I like the children's clothes and some of the homeware section of Asda. Stopped buying meat there a long time ago but they have a brilliant world food section. Sainsbury's is so expensive!

ItsNachoCheese · 29/04/2018 10:04

Sainsburys food is quite a bit more expensive than asda. Some of the quality is better some of it isnt nice at all

Thisnamechanger · 29/04/2018 10:08

I won't shop at Asda out of principle; Walmart-owned and they have taken the absolute piss back in the states

Same, I utterly loath Walmart.

BishopBrennansArse · 29/04/2018 10:37

To be fair I only buy loo roll at ASDA as it's nice and thick like Andrex yet v cheap

CakeOfThePan · 29/04/2018 11:26

It really is an individual store thing I think. I have two lovely Sainsbury’s, one is an in town 1960’s one and the other a massive superstore. Both are lovely bright and airy, quality is great it’s clean, lovely staff. They are both a joy to walk round. They smell the same as the store I used to go in as a small child. It’s lovely and familiar. In the big one you can get a nice lunch or breakfast. A lot of it’s fair trade and feels ethically sourced and produced.

The Asda is dark, grubby, quality not reliable or consistent it’s got a McDonald’s not a leisurely cafe. It is literally pile them high sell them cheap
They are not comparable
But the Asda I grew up near wasn’t like that.

The two asdas
