Has anyone seen the reports of some UK schools being put on lock down?

I’ve only seen it on HuffPost here:

m.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/schools-across-uk-on-lockdown_uk_5abb9117e4b03e2a5c77f152?f6s but it’s struck me as such a horrible thing to do. Before I quit teaching and returned to it from ML in2017 there were notices in our classes talking about bomb threats and what to do if we see a suspicious parcel on school grounds.

I know there were reported hoax bomb threats again this month, but running them down/shooting fleeing pupils is such vivid imagery to use.

I know emotive language gets jumped on a bit here but as someone who used to teach nursery children and with my own DS nearly that age, this has really upset me.

How would you know if your child's school was involved?

ProperLavs · 28/03/2018 17:24

My dd's school had a bloody lockdown practice today, right in the middle of her bloody dt food lesson. The entire class was in the middle cooking swiss rolls and the whole lot had to be binned.
I'm fucking livid.

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2018 17:24

Bassett my colleague had an email from the school

cheminotte · 28/03/2018 17:26

Yes this happened at my dc’s school today. We were given the option of picking up early but advised it was probably a hoax. It’s since been confirmed it was a hoax.

TalkinPeece · 28/03/2018 17:30

The one the other week was two kids bickering on Minecraft

a local one earlier this week where a kid got stabbed - her ex boyfriend and a kitchen knife

terrorism is less likely than copycats and attention seeking generally

elisenbrunnen · 28/03/2018 17:32

Properlavs - you are 'livid' that your dd swiss had to be binned because of a drill that could potentially save her life?

Better practice your sadface.

ChoccyJules · 28/03/2018 17:33

Yes, our primary school got one of the emails. They emailed parents to make us aware and said the police thought it likely a hoax. The Head was outside at hometime but other than that it was business as usual. I did make extra sure I was between the kids and the road on the walk home though, even though I felt daft.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/03/2018 17:35

Me too, (Durham) though we were told the threat was to primary schools. Police have said it isn't credible. I'm thinking someone with a grudge/just fucking nasty.

Bananalanacake · 28/03/2018 17:35

To be fair I'd be pissed off at the waste of food. Maybe parents had to pay for the ingredients. They could have planned it better.

ProperLavs · 28/03/2018 17:39

nah, there is no need for a lockdown practice . not at that school, really there isn't.
And yes we had to pay for the ingredients and yes it could have be planned better.

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2018 17:40

I tend to agree. Proportionate response

ProperLavs · 28/03/2018 17:41

i gave up last of my special jam too.

happypotamus · 28/03/2018 17:51

It happened at my Dc's school today. We were sent a text, which is how the school tends to communicate, advised they had been in touch in the police and it was most likely to be a hoax. We were given the option of picking up early, but even extra cautious DH didn't feel the need. Apparently a lot of parents did. I wondered how you would explain to your young child why you had collected them early without terrifying them. My DC went to after-school club as usual, but apparently at home time all children were collected from the school office rather than lining up in the playground like normal.

Fruitcocktail6 · 28/03/2018 17:53

I work in a Surrey school and we got an email early last week from the council saying we might be contacted with a bomb threat but ignore it and do not send children home

RaininSummer · 28/03/2018 18:01

My local school working friend says it is a hoax.

NoSwsForYou · 28/03/2018 18:51

I’ve heard lockdown practice becoming a thing here in the UK too, I had previously thought it was just in the USA. I’m glad this was just a hoax, but what a horrible hoax to make. Of all the targets, it seems particularly low to threaten children.

My ds’s school was today. Parents got an email and told almos certainly nothing to worry about. This is in south Devon

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2018 19:27

Fruit that sounds like an incredibly irresponsible email for them to send in advance

AlexanderHamilton · 28/03/2018 19:59

It sounds like it was handled a lot differently here.

Parents were sent a text at 1.50pm asking them to collect their children at 2.15pm. At 2.30pm all uncollected children were evacuated/transported to a nearby primary school.

TheDukesOfHazzard · 28/03/2018 21:06

Ours got the one, last week I think? We got an email. It was someone disgruntled trying to discredit the company the emails came from or something. Anyway was all handled no probs here.

elisenbrunnen · 29/03/2018 09:07

Our school have lock-down practice, fire-alarm practice and bomb-threat practice.

A sign of the times.

ConferencePear · 29/03/2018 09:27

Properlavs - are you sure that what happened at your school was a drill ? In all the schools I've worked in senior management has checked if cooking/science experiments and etc. are taking place.

ProperLavs · 29/03/2018 14:22

I couldn't say for certain, but the dc are pretty sure it was a drill. They're always talking about which desks they should hide under. There was certainly nothing from the head about it so I don't think it was anything sinister.

Risefromthedust · 29/03/2018 15:18

Same as conferencepear.

All the schools I have been in would have made sure drills were done at a time no one was cooking or experiments mainly sure to fire risk.
It could be the teacher in question has forgotten to tell them they were cooking that day.

Mine have had various lock down drills as their school is on a uni campus and all anyone would have to do to get in is jump over the reception desk :(

theanonymum1 · 31/03/2018 22:16

Rise really? This is slightly off topic, but what do Ofsted say about that? When a school I was working at was inspected... 2012 I think it was, they knew their safeguarding would be marked down because of the easy access into the school building, so employed people to man all access points as well as lock all the doors —it was a pain in the arse—
