Honestly what the hell??? This has really shocked and upset me this morning. The airline even said this isn't their protocol so what was the air hostess thinking? Poor puppy Sad

I’d of got off plane if they made me do that our dog is family
Disgusting airline glad it’s in the press

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/03/2018 12:12

This is shocking but apparently United have a disproportionately high incidence of animal deaths. One of our senior execs refuses point blank to fly with them because he says they are appalling in every way and he doesn't have to travel economy.

There's no way I'd have done it but then look at how United literally dragged that passenger off last year because they were overbooked - he was already in his seat and they told him he had to get off the plane. When he refused, security came on and he suffered a broken nose and concussion according to reports. Apparently it is a federal offence to refuse to obey a member of the crew and it may be the owner was scared of what might happen, especially since she had two children with her. I also can't believe no one else protested.

Ditzyitzy · 14/03/2018 14:00

Very upsetting but I think the owner is partly responsible, any frenchie owner knows their issues so why would you put them somewhere with no airflow? I wouldn’t have flown but maybe she didn’t have to knowledge of her breed/confidence to be as assertive as she should’ve. I do hope the attendant is punished though.

LoudBatPerson · 14/03/2018 14:52

The attendant was wrong to say that the dog had to be placed in the overhead locker, however, the owner is responsible too. I am sure most pet owners would leave the flight rather than place the dog in the overhead locker.

Even if you did allow the dog to be placed in the locker, why on earth would you not be checking on the dog during the flight and opening the door as much as possible?

I just cannot fathom how someone would agree to put their pet in the locker and then not check on them/open the door for air regularly.

HarrietKettle · 14/03/2018 14:53

I can't understand why you'd put your pet in a bloody overhead locker and think it would be ok.

ATailofTwoKitties · 14/03/2018 14:55

According to the radio, the airline is saying that the attendant asked for the case to be put in the overhead locker without realising that there was a pet inside it. Poor little mutt.

SouthernComforts · 14/03/2018 14:56

I can't understand why the owner didn't refuse even if it meant getting off the flight. It's a living creature ffs not a laptop.

HarrietKettle · 14/03/2018 15:08

Exactly. In what universe would you think its fine to pop your dog in a space like that. There must be some sort of witness statement from another passenger to explain what actually happened?

Hillingdon · 14/03/2018 15:15

What a horrible horrible story but surely the owner thought to check on her dog during the flight and what on earth was the stewardness thinking. That cannot be part of the training course! Flying is the pits these days. The staff are grumpy, they seem to think what they say goes and no back chat.

Unless the owner was trying to sneak the dog on board and the United employee didn't know

HarrietKettle · 14/03/2018 15:23

BBC says a passenger behind said the attendant kept telling the woman to put the carrier in the locker and the woman eventually complied, but it just seems mad.

sirlee66 · 14/03/2018 16:05

Oh god I read about this and had a massive cry I'm 35 weeks pregnant My lovely girl pup... God. I'd just be beside myself if something like that happened to her.

And I would have trusted / conformed to authority.

Feel so awful for that family.

UndomesticHousewife · 14/03/2018 16:28

Why the hell did the owner put the dog there and only open the door after 3 hours?!
Of course the stewardess shouldn’t have said the puppy had to go there, but even so what person actually puts their dog into an airless box

Redglitter · 14/03/2018 16:31

So all these passengers knew the poor thing was in an airless locker and not one of them thought to suggest opening the bloody thing despite hearing the poor dog during the flight?? Ffs

HarrietKettle · 14/03/2018 16:40

Some of them must have been aware at least of the account from the other passenger is to be believed. That's what I don't get.

ATailofTwoKitties · 14/03/2018 16:51

I should think they thought, 'Goodness, I didn't know dogs travelled in lockers, but it must be safe/have air if the attendant said to do it.'

I thought dogs travelled in the hold, but I've never actually looked this up.

wowfudge · 15/03/2018 07:04

There's a bit more to this - the pet carrier should fit under the seat in front, just like any other piece of hand luggage. I think the owner of the dog is as much to blame because she should either have bought a bag that would fit or done all she could to get back under the seat without harming the dog. Or had the dog put in the hold for the journey. Of course that would have been more expensive.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 15/03/2018 12:16

wowfudge reports say the carrier was the right size but the FA made her move it anyway.
