lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:24

t'was in the sun but theres an over the counter test you can get called pink or blue (or similar) and from a prick of mums blood you can tell what sex the 6w foetus is.

OP posts:
lulumama · 04/05/2007 21:25

no, that cannot be right!
the only way to tell is through amniotic fluid surely...not through the mums blood

LadyTophamHatt · 04/05/2007 21:27

heard it one the news earlier too on radio 1.

Its a bad bad bad idea IMO

lulumama · 04/05/2007 21:27

how does it work..science people help me here !?!?!?

lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:28

apparently not

Taylormama · 04/05/2007 21:28

dna from the baby apparently mixes with mum's blood and voila (saw on GMTV this morning so very dumbed down )

Olihan · 04/05/2007 21:29

I did!

£190 though , wonder if they had a point about it increasing abortion rates if parents got the 'wrong' result?

Surely people aren't that desperate?

DrippingLizzie · 04/05/2007 21:31

Very, very disturbing. I heard this story on FiveLive today and it's true, this test CAN tell the sex of the baby via prick test. The implications of this are just horrendous and it is bound to raise the abortion rate.

lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:31

i know that a lot of hospitals have changed policy on sexing scans lately, seems a bit creepy tho imho. tho i found out with ds and will again. but at a 20w "reassurance" private scan.

OP posts:
lulumama · 04/05/2007 21:31

so it is 98 % reliable......so waht about the 2 % that are wrong.....

ok, i can see that it might be useful re congenital issues, but anything else is purely pointing more towards designer babies...

other than that, why would you need to know , so early on?

i found out the gender of both my children at the 20 week scan, have no issue with finding out, but cannot see a reason that you should need to

and if you did, it wold be a situation that would be being medically managed surely..

MKG · 04/05/2007 21:31

The box should say "For entertainment purposes only" It sounds like a fun thing to do, but I wouldn't trust the results

lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:33

good point lulu. 6w is so early too!

bad idea IMO.

lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:35

even the website is creepy!

OP posts:
lulumama · 04/05/2007 21:35

in certain counties, you cannot find out at the 20 week scan, for that reason, i think this is jsut playing in to the wrong hands on the pretext of being helpful

whomovedmychocolate · 04/05/2007 21:35

WTF - listen to this testimonial:
--------
At first I was skeptic of using this kit. But after reading about how it works, it made sense. So I and a bunch of my Bible Study gals worked on performing the test. Several days later I found out I had a girl. Even though I still had my doubts... I went into get my ultrasound done weeks later and it was confirmed. We're having a baby girl. We're so excited and we're glad we found out early!
Thanks again for this great product!
---------

Bible study gals???? WIthout wishing to be terribly irreverent WTF is that all about?

Callisto · 04/05/2007 21:35

Completely agree with DrippingLizzie - dreadful idea and will definitely lead to more abortions.

Callisto · 04/05/2007 21:37

Lots of NHS hospitals have a no sexing policy these days for the same reason Lulu.

lulumama · 04/05/2007 21:38

that testimonial is crap

she had her doubts and needed the confirmation of her 20 week scan

what a pile of absolute nonsense

probably made up and the bit about bible study added to make it more believable and credible, that nice christian ladies would use it

lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:38

from an emotional side, most of my mcs were at 6w and im glad i dont know what sex they were. before the 12w mark there are so many risks

This is fascinating.....I'm reading the FAQs on how it works:

-----------
Are there specific situations which could affect the accuracy of the Pink or Blue® test?
Yes. If a mother has a miscarriage, abortion, blood transfusion, we do not recommend Pink or Blue®. In addition, there are a few rare instances which could affect the accuracy of the Pink or Blue® test. Sometimes a mother "starts out" with twin fetuses and then for some reason one of the embryos is naturally reabsorbed and only one baby is born. This is called a "vanishing" twin and is rare. In such rare cases, our gender test could be compromised, and we would then give a full refund. To apply for a refund please contact us by email or give us a call (1-866-6-WHAT-R-U).
----------

So they are saying that the chromosonal markers (the Y chromosone they look for to identify males) remains if you abort or miscarry a fetus. But they don't say how long for. Nice get out of jail free to use a vanishing twin as a reason for getting it wrong though. Got to admire the marketing brains behind this (if not the ethics).

lulumama · 04/05/2007 21:39

i just want to know one good reason why you would need to know at 6 weeks, and if you did, why it would not be in a medical context

Taylormama · 04/05/2007 21:39

i didn't find out the sex of my DS and was thrilled to have the best surprise of my life ... have to say i think something like this may be used for more sinister motives. Also like any other test it isn't 100% accurate ... feel there is a lot of potential for upset and worse

lissielou · 04/05/2007 21:41

i agree lulu, at 6w most women are only just peeing on that stick, not worrying about painting the nursery!
