As we have a women role model thread going, who do you think is a good role model for boys.

OP posts:
franca70 · 03/05/2007 17:45

sorry couldn't keep up.

paulaplumpbottom · 03/05/2007 18:35

He should have been the one to be President. He wouldn't have been perfect but I think on a whole he would have been great. Its sad we'll never know.

DrDaddy · 03/05/2007 19:39

Ronald Reagan??? Are you having a giraffe?

paulaplumpbottom · 03/05/2007 20:40

What on earth do you guys have against The Great Communicator?

gemmiegoatlegs · 03/05/2007 20:44

pizza man, from the Higgley Town Heroes. Now thats our kind of hero!

DrDaddy · 03/05/2007 22:14

PPB - you've got to be kidding! I won't even let my fingers start on that moron...

Londonmamma · 03/05/2007 22:25

Al Gore.
Watch 'An Inconvenient Truth and weep that Bush got the presidency.....

DeviousDaffodil · 03/05/2007 22:37

DS1 hero worships DAvid Tennant - which is fine by me.Most of my preferred role models are friends and family.

expatinengland · 04/05/2007 16:44

Paula...OMG..Ronald Reagan..The man was just a figurehead for the real 'power players' behind the scenes in the US. (Since this approach worked for Reagan, the Conservatives/Neo-Cons then put Bushie II in there because they knew he would be a good figurehead too as he loved the idea of being President more than the job of doing President.) You folks don't really think he's doing the job of President, do you?

Also, the USSR at the time wasn't able to keep up the arms race because of their spiraling inflation, etc. The communist system was breaking under it's own weight and leaders such as Gorbachov (sp?) saw this too, and the US 'power players' came up with a good PR scheme to portray Reagan as "The Great Communicator." BTW, I think he was a good governor of CA and he was moderate then, but once he became President he became a diehard Conservative. Agree that his 'tear down this wall' speech was wonderful! Too bad he got taken for a ride by the 'power brokers' though. I think his heart early on was in the right place.

I know very, very little about UK politics and, as an American, don't feel at liberty to discuss it anyway. However, I know a lot about US politics and I can emphatically state that if one thinks Ronald Reagan is a role model, well then one hates poor people (after all it's their fault they're poor..you know just lazy people...he completely gutted funding for the safety net for the poor in the US), hates the environment (he gutted the Dept. of Interior budget and put oil/gas CEOs at the helm of protecting the US environment, national parks, etc.)...ohhhh I gotta stop..making myself ill here...Basically he only liked rich people...I still remember Reagan talking about the NHS system poorly because conservative US politicans are always talking about how bad socialized medicine is when the subject comes up again and again in the US..So guess you think the NHS should be abolished too..

Anyway, agree with the other role models for boys that are mentioned except for Karl Marx(well those that I know who they are in any case), and I'd add Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter (not a good President, but awesome with Habitat for Humanity), and any male on the planet who respects women and treats them with respect.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/05/2007 16:58

Actually I don't think he hated poor people he just didn't demonise the rich the way most people do. He lowered some taxes that were shockingly unfair.

I do agree he wasn't great about the enviroment.

franca70 · 04/05/2007 19:54

Well it is quite unfair to lower taxes for rich people and erase services for poor ones.

Kevlarhead · 04/05/2007 20:53

"The man was just a figurehead for the real 'power players' behind the scenes in the US."

Given he was in the early stages of senile dementia for much of his presidency, that's a good thing.

"My fellow Americans, I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We will begin bombing in five minutes."

There are certain things I would not like ds joking about. Incinerating millions in a nuclear holocaust is one of them.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/05/2007 22:08

You are right, I bet you have never said something tasteless or told an unsavory joke.

trice · 04/05/2007 22:33

I always thought Alister Cook had a good and meaningful life. I would like my ds to emulate someone who enjoyed life as well as standing up for what is right. I would second John Peel if only for his love of family.

trice · 04/05/2007 22:34

Paula - do you have a thing for Ronald Regan? I can't think of a good thing to say about the man.

Londonmamma · 04/05/2007 22:49

I second John Peel, he was lovely.

I'm rather taken with George Monbiot - very Green but strangely alluring ...

Kevlarhead · 07/05/2007 23:36

"You are right, I bet you have never said something tasteless or told an unsavory joke."

Of course I have; the difference is that some things you don't joke about. Not because there's a law against it, but because to do so would indicate you didn't take your professional integrity as seriously as you should.

When I worked with children's social services I didn't joke about selling all the names and addresses of vulnerable kids to the members of the county's sex offenders register. It's not funny because it would have been a violation of trust and because I could have (fairly easily) done it.

Similarly, RR joking about turning half the planet into a radioactive black smear is terrifying rather than funny because the doddering old bugger had direct access to the presidential nuclear button.

MrMariella · 07/05/2007 23:43

The most potent good thing about role models is their way of problem-solving. OVercoming difficulties, assisting others, having a passion, and being good at what they do.

David Beckham is still hard to beat for youngsters. >

MrMariella · 07/05/2007 23:45

or Spongebob Squarepants......

Kevlarhead · 08/05/2007 00:41

Spongebob beats Beckham hands down I'm afraid...

MrMariella · 08/05/2007 00:43

Have you ever seen them in the same pool at the same time??

Kevlarhead · 08/05/2007 01:05

Good point...

How long before he sings the Goofy Goober song as part of a goal celebration?
