"parents who give alcohol to under 15s should be preosecuted"

just catching up with the news.

\link{article here}

I know the minister has rejected it, but and that anyone can think this is a sensible idea. The problem in the UK is surely that alcohol is "just for adults" and therefore more attractive to teenagers? The French don't have a big binge drinking problem do they?

I had wine and beers sips from as far back as I can remember, made it not a big deal to me. I know kids with stricter upbringing with regards to alchohol go mad once they hit 16-ish.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/04/2007 21:29

exactly.

why do people have to be so hard line about things?

Is this your Monday debate?

Shall read article and attempt an intelligent contribution.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/04/2007 21:35

erm, can be I suppose.

I actually think they should lower the alcohol age limit for beer and other low alcohol drinks. maybe wine too, but not spirits or alcopops. they should probably ban lcopops. make the kids drink snakebite and black, like we did.

A law like that would be unworkable - I don't think it's something that requires legislation.

I was allowed a glass of cider or wine with Sunday lunch from about the age of 14 - will probably do the same with the DSs. I can't say it made me particularly sensible with alcohol though - I've had my fair share of clutching the toilet bowl evenings...but I never saw my parents drunk, and wine was always a normal part of family life so I knew there was a way of incorporating moderate booze consumption into every day life - it just took me about 15 years to get to that point myself

fryalot · 30/04/2007 21:38

The legal age limit for a child to drink alcohol is 5.

5

So how can anybody be prosecuted for something that is not against the law?

marthamoo · 30/04/2007 21:39

Ugh @ snakebite and black. Alcopops are dangerous, I think - because they don't taste like booze at all (they taste like melted down lollipops...yeaaach).

SenoraPostrophe · 30/04/2007 21:40

squonk - this charity is suggesting we change the law.

Agree they need to ban the cheap drinks that appeal to kids and let families give kids a more sensible attitude towards alcohol.

My DS loves a bit of cider, but only the decent stuff .

fryalot · 30/04/2007 21:41

aah, thank you senora should have read the article instead of assuming I knew what it was going to say

Caligula · 30/04/2007 21:42

I think this is just Alcohol Concern's way of making themselves better known.

Ridiculous idea imo.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/04/2007 21:42

I used to go to the pub at 16, but my brother used to drink very heavily in the park with his mates. I know which I'd rather ds and dd do.

but that's 16. I don't see how a spot of wine at 12 with meals hurts anyone.

hmm. so we're all agreed then? that's a turn up.

I think that they are a bit pissed off that the predicted alcoholic tidal wave from the licensing hours changing didn't materialise, that they are now picking on something else.

When are they going to realise that a more laid back approach to alcohol teaches children more than banning it and telling them it's bad.

We all know what a teenager will do when told not to touch something
