It'd be an easy way to knock out £6billion worth of spending.

Just found a Register article on it.

Cameron paints ID policy by numbers
By Mark Ballard
Published Thursday 23rd November 2006 15:04 GMT

David Cameron, the straight-talking public relations executive who runs the Conservative party, gave the reasons why he opposes ID Cards yesterday.

In a speech at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the self-confessed "liberal Conservative" said the government was wasting its time with ID Cards because they would not protect our security.

He said they wouldn't stop terrorists, benefits cheats, illegal immigrants, or identity thieves. Further, the implementation of the computer system to run them was likely to be bodged, if the government's track record was anything to go by.

Yet, it was the speech of a liberal conservative with a small "l", which might as well mean centre with a big "C", and as such presented civil libertarian principles with provisos.

"We must tolerate some violation of our privacy - for example, through the use of video surveillance cameras - in order to protect our security," his speech read.

As the Conservatives have yet to fill out their position on the broader threat of the database state, we cannot tell what they really mean when they call for ID cards to be scrapped. ®

I am very, very worried. I DO NOT WANT the government to hold any biometric data on me and will vote for Tories or Lib Dems if they scrap this system. Why should they have this info on me - I am supposed to be a free citizen of this country (ha ha ha)and they are supposed to be doing what WE WANT, not the other way round. IF I thought we would be safer then I might just change my mind, but I doubt it will (won't be compulsary for visitors so they could bomb us), but as usual it will be used in some heavy handed way to penalise us normal people just living our normal lives. Plus the cost is unforgivable - would prefer the money was spent on the the elderly/kids and the ill (how much Herceptin would this buy? oops sorry, of course there is no money for that). And don't even get me started on the children's database. Sorry, I hardly ever rant but you've caught a raw nerve on this one. Can't we start a revolution?

I'd forgotten about this...

After the cock up with the details on that website for junior doctors it is beyond hope that this government could operate a system that wouldn't give a golden opportunity to every fraudster from here to (hell, where do all the fraudsters come from these days? Nigeria? I always get emails from there saying so-and-so needs my help to get their £20million lost in UK banks, I just need to send them £x amount!)

And considering this government has done absolutely nothing to protect us against fraudsters it would be left to us to sort the holy mess left of our lives.

At one hospital which is running partial electronic medical records, the nurses leave their swipe cards in the machines all day. Those cards are meant to mean every time your personal details are accessed, there's a record of the user. Putting one card in all day so anyone can look obviously renders that useless. But that's what real people do.

And that's just one tiny facet of this nonsense. What about the huge database storing details of every child in the country? What about us having 1 per cent of the world population but 20 per cent of the CCTV network? Or public transport season tickets that record and store every journey - if you want to snoop on someone, or just make their life hell, then just get yourself a mate who works for Transport for London...

My godmother's husband was a renowned historian. He was convinced we'd see facism in this country within the next 20 years. He died six years ago so there isn't long left to stop it. And tbh the present government has put the mechanisms in place for any future less benign (ha!) regime to overturn what little democracy we have left.

Orwell would have had a field day with this
