We're in Kent. DH felt it in Faversham. I was in Sittingbourne and didn't. This is the first I have heard about explosions causing it.. will look it up.

So what happened?

UnquietDad · 29/04/2007 15:50

On Saturday, an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale hit Folkestone, causing untold disruption and distress.

  • Many were woken well before their giro arrived
  • Several priceless collections of mementos from the Balearics and Spanish Costas were damaged
  • Three areas of historic and scientifically significant litter were disturbed
  • Thousands are confused and bewildered, trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting has happened in Folkestone.

One resident, Donna-Marie Dutton, a 17 year old mother-of-three said "It was such a shock, little Chantal-Leanne came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it. I was still shaking when I was watching Trisha the next morning."

Apparently though, looting did carry on as normal.

The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to help the stricken masses.

Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings including benefit books and jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • £2 buys chips, scraps and blue pop for a family of four.
  • £10 can take a family to Margate for the day, where children can play on an unspoiled mudflat among the national collection of stinging nettles.
  • 22p buys a biro for filling in a spurious compensation claim.

LOL. You are very good at those. You should see if MN would let you do a daily news report.

UnquietDad · 30/04/2007 10:00

I have to confess I didn't mak that one up. It was adapted from something a friend sent me 5 years ago about the Dudley earthquake!

fortyplus · 30/04/2007 10:02

We live about 5 miles away from the Buncefield Oil Terminal. When that blew up the shock measured 2.5 on the Richter scale and ds1's bed shook.

UnquietDad · 30/04/2007 10:03

We heard the thump from that in Sheffield. Only very distantly and dimly - I thought it was a teddy falling out of DD's bed.

fortyplus · 30/04/2007 10:11

dh works in the building right next to it - if it had been on a weekday the estimate is that 1500 people could have died. The shockwave before the blast sucked air inwards so hard that it sucked the mortar out from between the bricks of the building
