don't open it if you are sensitive, because it is very sad, if you are one who's previously been upset by sad links on here, just leave it, ok?

i heard about this on the radio tonight, even the newsreader sounded disbelieving. terribly sad, world's gone mad. good advice not to read it if you're feeling fragile, my2pworth.

AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 19:58

oh right, fio, r4 6pm news was saying parking dispute. terrible though, regardless.

i just can't believe this is the world we live in, tbh. has it always been like this? it seems to be getting so much worse. it's like people are de-evolving. i have read that every society eventually collapses into anarchy, the more i watch the news, the more i think they might have a point!

This is just so so yes what is exactly is this world coming to? i dread to think what is going to be happening when our kids grow up if this is what it's like now!

Sad
foxinsocks · 06/04/2007 20:12

how awful - I use those roads as a cut through from the south circ to avoid Clapham common and it's certainly not a rough area (in London terms).

nickytwotimes · 06/04/2007 20:15

this is a very story.
it is easy to think the world is getting worse, but it isn't. it's just all that all the horrible stuff gets reported now -100 years ago, we wouldn't have known about much bad news outside our own area.

edam · 07/04/2007 08:29

This is just streets away from where we used to live. Cliche alert but it really does send shivers down my spine. Guardian says neighbours say people get very territorial over parking outside their houses (fat chance, round there, I'd have thought) and the victim had been involved in a long-running dispute on the issue.

Not long after we moved a young boy was shot in a road rage incident - car in front of his father's screeched to a halt, guy got out and shot through the passenger window. Awful.

edam · 07/04/2007 08:31

There were national newspapers reporting big crime stories 100 years ago. And the Victorian era was very high crime. I think we all hark back to the 1950s which had very low crime figures - supposed to be because of aftermath of WW2 plus high rates of employment.

swifterella · 07/04/2007 08:32

this is literally 2 streets down from where my mum lives. very scary. It is gorgeous round there.very yummy mummy and a great community feel. very sad indeed

paulaplumpbottom · 07/04/2007 08:40

They had a stronger work ethic to. To many people think its easier to steal from the government and people than to work

edam · 07/04/2007 08:41

It is very yummy mummy but lots of crack dens and drug-related crime off Falcon Road, round the corner - around the Winstanley estate.

sillysillysilly · 07/04/2007 08:43

yeah but its not like it used to be edam? the house prices are so ludicrous round there now you know

edam · 07/04/2007 08:55

I know, but there is lots of poverty side by side with people who can afford expensive houses. Winstanley estate is council housing, for instance. Not that people in council houses are more likely to be criminals, but in inner London where you get poverty you get drugs (and the middle classes use plenty of drugs too, just less likely to get into trouble for it).

Look at the crime stats for Battersea and they are scary. Lots of yellow boards - I used to see three or four every week within a five minute walk of my house. Spending a lot of money on property doesn't insulate you from the social problems of inner London. We moved when there was a shooting in the house opposite - it was definitely aimed at the victim but I thought I don't want dh, ds or me to be caught in the crossfire one day or victims of a gunman who has the wrong address.

MrsMar · 10/04/2007 15:44

I live in the next street to this woman, her family live opposite me. I where ever you live doesn't insulate you from nutters. It is a safe area in that any area is safe. I work in television news and I can't tell you the times I've been to the scenes of murders in idyllic country locations. I'm afraid there are nutters everywhere.

It's a horrible story though, I can't think of anything that would annoy me so much I'd take out a gun and shoot a defenseless person in the head, twice!

Fimbo · 10/04/2007 15:49

I live in genteel Norfolk (Norwich to be precise)

Last week, someone was beaten to death in MacDonalds over a "minor" disagreement.

Ivor · 10/04/2007 15:56

This is sad
This is the sort of crap we get here in Detroit, I'm shocked that this happened in London!

speedymama · 10/04/2007 16:04

In terms of the location, I don't understand why people are shocked. Abigail Witchell was nearly killed in an idyllic part of the country. Crime happens everywhere. Unfortunately, victims living in poor areas appear to engender less sympathy than those living in more desirable locations.

Ivor · 10/04/2007 16:05

I thought gun crime of this nature was still rare in the UK, but I hav'ent lived there for 3 years so maybe I'm out of touch!
Still sad thou

MrsMar · 10/04/2007 18:33

It is so sad, but I still think luckily that violent crime is really rare. I sound like Nick Ross on Crimewatch, but despite public perception, according to all statistics, government or otherwise, violent crime is actually falling. It doesn't feel like it when it's on your doorstep though.
