We actually fancied calling our dd 'Edradour' after a Pitlochry whisky, but the ruddy Swedes got there first

I might be joking about wanting to call dd that......???????????

Personally I think they should bring those laws here - save a generation of children beinf called Peaches or Satchel or after the local football team....

suejonez · 04/04/2007 19:59

does no-one else think its funny thet the tax authorites are fighting this?! Can you imagine our Inland Rvenue taking Bob Geldoff to court for Pixie yellowbottom (or whatever her full name is)

fuzzywuzzy · 04/04/2007 19:59

That explains why all our Swedish students are called either Freddie or Erlend, always wondered about that one.....

ViscountessLittleEasterLapin · 04/04/2007 20:01

They do it in France too, do you remember that couple who went to court because they wanted to call their daughter "Megane" and they weren't allowed to?

(Their surname was "Renault", BTW! )

ComeOVeneer · 04/04/2007 20:08

Don't french names have to be the name of a saint or something like that? I should now this what with my grandmother being french and all .

CorrieDale · 04/04/2007 20:09

I'd be surprised, given that it's a completely secular country! Isn't it Spain that has that?

ComeOVeneer · 04/04/2007 20:38

Just googled it. Aparrently (sp) it was law until the end of the 18th century that only saints' names could be used. In 1966 a limited number of non religious and forgein names were permitted. It was only in 1993 that parents had the right to freely choose the child's name without any constraints but if deemed innappropriate can be legally contested.

CorrieDale · 04/04/2007 20:44

Well, you live and learn. I was right in one way though - I am very surprised!!!!!
