Ahhhhh Tanya Byron in T2. Music to the ears of anyone with a boy or typical toddler in the toddler group/playgroup situation.

"As much as I find the tanned, toned yummy-mummy brigade insipid and shallow, I also find their well-behaved, precocious little offspring deeply uninteresting. "

although she'd hate me obv

She is God.

'At the risk of sounding boring, old-fashioned and repetitive (I seem to say this every few weeks in this column), what on earth is happening to us as a generation of parents when it seems that we become completely overwhelmed by our children when they behave like children?'

Round of applause for Tanya!

I particularly liked this sentiment:

"what on earth is happening to us as a generation of parents when it seems that we become completely overwhelmed by our children when they behave like children?"

Brilliant article - MN should contact her and ask permission to put it at the top of every parenting thread!

Soapbox · 02/04/2007 11:38

LOL - snap FiS

JackieNo · 02/04/2007 11:39

Tanya rules ok.

sunnysideup · 02/04/2007 11:48

Great article. I do so agree with her about certian children who just WILL rebel at some point or other.....it reminds me that it's ok to have a child who is not afraid to express themselves even though you get the feeling of judgemental people tutting at your back....their kids are squashed and moulded and as Tanya so rightly said, they WILL REBEL SOMETIME and I just hope I'm there to see it

AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2007 11:49

she's so good, isn't she? jo frost would've had his trousers stapled to the naughty step...

MerryMarigold · 02/04/2007 11:51

"Have parents always felt so powerless in the face of their children?s behaviour? I actually think not. Certainly my mother and her friends are scathing of this overanalytical generation of parents."

It's true. Personally I blame the level of awareness there is now on how children can be affected by their parents. ("I have terrible relationships with men and it's all my mum's fault"). Dr Tanya only highlights this - "Your child won't eat and it's all because your marriage isn't very good".

Interestingly, she has made quite a fortune out of analysing children's behaviour in the mass media and certainly made her contribuion to this overanalytical generation of parents.

(Don't get me wrong, I do love watching House of Tiny Tearaways - I do, I do).

beansprout · 02/04/2007 11:57

I blardy love her

RTKangaMummy · 02/04/2007 11:58

DEFFO BRILL

beansprout · 02/04/2007 11:59

No, I don't agree, she just gives some simple guidelines and if you watch Little Angels or HOTT it's the same advice over and over again. Dh and I were discussing this yesterday. She has given us some simple suggestions as groundrules and they inform a lot of what we do. Without that I would revert to type i.e. parent in the way my mum did which is not really the way I want to go. Some people take some advice and overanalyse but that doesn't make her wrong.

AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2007 12:00

to be fair, merrymarigold, she is a child psychologist. it's not like she just went to catering college and decided to branch out, is it? [naming no names]

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 02/04/2007 12:07

oh she is fab.

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 02/04/2007 12:09

I need to take TB (unfortunate initials) with me to toddler groups etc, so she can explain to the insipid yummies, of which there are so many in Bath, that DS1 is normal and not a psychopath in training, as so many of them seem to think.

Great article. And VERY reassuring!

yeahinaminute · 02/04/2007 12:19

FAB article - hopefully everyone will realise that children are little personalities and exercise their personalities - in a loving and caring environment which allows them to blossom

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 02/04/2007 12:23

yiam, have you recovered yet?

yeahinaminute · 02/04/2007 12:25
