100 days until Smoking Ban in all enclosed public places............................................

Well as it's just gone midnight it's now 99 days.
I have been a smoker in the past - never a constant smoker but have been known to smoke a few ciggies on nights out. Glad to say that I haven't had one for a good few months now.
Even going by my past, it's going to be really good to go into a smoke-free zone on a night out when it comes into force.

I can't wait until we can go to the pub and come home smelling the same as we went in.
It really will encourage us to use pubs more, the smokey atmosphere really stops us going in them...makes me wheeze.

princesscc · 24/03/2007 00:18

I agree, I don't smoke nearly as much as I used to and nights out where when I did smoke. But since I cut right back, I don't even bother taking ciggies out with me. I really notice how bad I smell when I come in of an evening and its not me smoking!

That will be great. I met a friend for lunch yesterday at a pub/restaurant. We were forced to eat in the restaurant bit rather than having something cheap and cheerful in the pub bit because they still allowed smoking in the pub. Made the meal much more expensive.

earlgrey · 24/03/2007 08:12

Does anyone that smokes still smoke in enclosed places anyway? S'pose they must do judging by what's been said on here.

I always make a point of going outside wherever we are. So sadly the ban won't make any difference to my cutting down.

2shoesonanegghunt · 24/03/2007 10:13

Is there anyone who can explain the new rules to me or do a link please

KTeePee · 24/03/2007 11:02

My in-laws were visiting recently from Ireland (where the ban has been in place for a few years) and they really noticed the difference when going out to pubs here, smell of smoke on their clothes, etc.

The only downside to the ban in Ireland, imo, is that in the summer the beer gardens/outside tables at restaurants are full of smokers which makes them not very child-friendly....

Dh and I have said that we will go to pubs more for food when it comes into effect. We dont go atm because of the kids.

I'll also be pleased as we live next door to the village local and on an evening the smell of smoke drifts into our hallway.

dither · 24/03/2007 11:07

hurrah!

now all i have to do is actually get out into public places to appreciate it (havent been in a pub for about 4 years i reckon!)

ebenezer · 24/03/2007 16:00

Hooray as well!! Can't wait to get out to the pub and not come back stinking. I'm interested in the point about pub gardens being full of smokers. How is an enclosed space defined exactly?? I would have thought there'll be uproar come those long hot summer evenings when families want to sit outside without being polluted.

saltire · 24/03/2007 16:02

In Scotland, bus shelters are classed as being a public enclosed space.
We went down to the lake District a few weeks ago and it was strange going into a pub or restaurant for a meal and being asked if we wanted smoking or non smoking!

mears · 24/03/2007 16:08

You will LOVE it. Here in Scotland it has been brilliant to to go into a pub or restaurant and not come out reeking of fags.

Only problem is the amount of people hanging round doorways to smoke - especially at the hospital. People are supposed to go to the smoking shelters but don't bother. Also it is a PIA to constantly let women and partners in and out of the maternity unit when the doors are security locked at night.

Hopefully the message will sink in that it is better to stop than hassle everyone else to get out for a fag.

On the upside, a lot of midwives have stopped because they can't stand having to go outside for a smoke in their cars during their breaks.

CadburyCremeSquonk · 24/03/2007 16:10

2shoes - what it basically means is that you can smoke in a private place - your home or someone else's, and you can smoke outside.

That's it, I think

stleger · 24/03/2007 16:16

Have just had lunch in local pub in Cork with my kids. I can't remember how awful it is to stink of smoke after such an outing. And pubs have fab. outdoor bits now.

2shoesonanegghunt · 24/03/2007 19:02

but doesn't is it say enclosed spaces. so streets/parks and seafront would be ok?

CadburyCremeSquonk · 24/03/2007 19:04

yeah, I think so, streets, parks, seafront, etc would be outside

Blondilocks · 24/03/2007 19:05

It'll also be fab to be wear a nice new top out in a club & not have to risk getting a cigarette burn in it!

The only thing is - it's coming in in time for the summer, so when we all want to sit outside the pub will we still have to put up with all the smokers? (Still I guess it's not as bad outside).

Charleesunnysunsun · 24/03/2007 19:11

I was hoping they were going to ban it in public completley in town and highstreets nothing pi**es me off more than some fag hag walking past us blowing smoke all over us and in the pushchair. Im an ex smoker and i only ever smoked at home or in clear areas, i hate the smell of it now it makes me gag!

2shoesonanegghunt · 24/03/2007 19:22

I suppose it would be hard to police it.
Would be in a way easier. I am a smoker and am glad it has been banned in pubs and places like that. Hate all the uncertantity about can you or can't you so will be easier. you just can't.

stleger · 24/03/2007 20:11

Here it is OK o the street - some litterbins have ashtray bits, shops are responsible for sweeping up outside. Lots of pubs have patio heater areas (probably upsetting Green Party). And lots of smoking gaggles outside pubs in winter looking like naughty kids - and appearing to have fun.

ebenezer · 24/03/2007 20:17

Does anyone else find smoking on the beach or seafront particularly revolting?? I mean, fresh sea air, crashing waves - and bloody fag smoke. Personally I think it should be a blanket ban on public places. Imagine a crowded beach in high season - if the group next to you are all lighting up then it'll be just as bad as if it were indoors really.

southeastastra · 24/03/2007 20:21

oh 2shoes do you fancy giving up with me? were doomed now us smokers

2shoesonanegghunt · 24/03/2007 22:32

sounds daft but at the moment no. i so must loose weight or I will be naked in the summer. skint and need my old clothes to fit.
