There is nothing like a dame . . . . .
nothing

OP posts:

I thought her casting in Indian Summers was spot on though.

ParanoidBeryl · 09/07/2017 01:54

I liked her as Mrs Weasley. Exactly as she was in the book.

EBearhug · 09/07/2017 02:19

She's been one of the UK's top actors and comedians for many years. Whether or not an individual likes her work, she is very popular. She deserves it as much as many of those who have already been knighted in her field, and more than some of those who already have been.

supersop60 · 17/07/2017 09:58

I lover her and think she is truly talented.
Unlike Michael Caine (also considered a national treasure) who is the same in every film since Alfie.

ShelaghTurner · 17/07/2017 10:21

I love her but must be the only fan around who doesn’t like acorn antiques and didn’t find two soups funny. Love VW and JW in everything else though.

Notknownatthisaddress · 23/07/2017 16:53

Ooops I thought she was already a dame too!

Still don't get it, when someone gets paid (handsomely) for a job/career they enjoy, and they get a damehood or knighthood for it. Confused

I mean, she has made a lot of good films and tv programmes, but she has lined her own pocket spectacularly into the bargain.

dataandspot · 23/07/2017 16:55

Don't you wonder why someone in her position is still doing adverts?

I do!

Notknownatthisaddress · 23/07/2017 16:59

Not really, as she is an actress, and I guess any role/job is work ... even an advert.

BackforGood · 23/07/2017 17:20

About time.

I mean, I don't think 'honours' should be given to people who have done well in their professions (and usually been well paid for it too), I think they should be given to the real heroes who go out an volunteer - making other peoples lives better week in and week out....

However, given our current system, I think she should have been honoured years ago - it does seem weird who gets nominated and who doesn't. Very random.

EBearhug · 23/07/2017 17:25

Honours are also for that - it's just we only hear about the ones who are already famous.

Sparsely though.
I've known 2 people locally who have been given honours - one was an OBE for 'service to Industry' (for which he was well paid and rewarded - it was, you know, his job) and the other was a local crossing lady (think it was a CBE or MBE) because, once again, she'd done her (not so well paid) job for 40 years. Newsflash - lots of people do their jobs for 40 years. Nothing against the lady - it was a shock to her I think, but it's hardly remarkable to go to work is it ?
I also know dozens of people who have spent a lifetime volunteering (indeed I went to a funeral not so long ago of a lady who had got 67 years recorded, volunteering with the one group she volunteered with), but I know several who have done 50 year, and dozens who have done 40 yrs plus, but have never come across anyone, personally, who has been given an honour for that - I realise they do happen, and I also realise someone has to nominate people, but just thing there should be a better "system" so it becomes more common / regular / automatic for volunteers rather than famous people.

Blush Sorry OP, slight derail, off on my hobby horse.

I do like Julies Walters though Grin

I have to say that I can't see what all the fuss is about, OK so she's an actress but IMO she's not that good at it dons tin hat

Creampastry · 24/07/2017 06:57

People getting awards for doing their job is bollocks. Firemen getting an award for going into grenfell tower is more deserving.

Wingedharpy · 26/07/2017 01:43

Bit of a contradictory statement there Creampastry.
The firemen were doing their job too, surely? - granted, the job involves a lot more personal risk than acting in a play/film/advert.
Get a form and start nominating if you feel strongly enough.
