This sad news about fire at grenfell tower....

I have recently renewed our home insurance and several companies required that every time we stepped out of house, we must lock all windows with their keys otherwise theft would not be covered. it wasn't just enough to close the window shut with handle. keys should also be taken out of the locks and kept out of sight.

i then argued with atleast 2 that does that mean when we get home we take a small fidgety key and unlock our windows? they said yes ... at night we can unlock occupied room windows. if we didn't and incase of fire at night where would we go looking for a small key and it would not necessarily be close to our escape.

i am now tempted to just keep windows unlocked but close the handle ofcourse. i feel this is such an unreasonable condition from insurers as we have closed shut our windows and if there is a break in, we should be covered for theft as it is unauthorised entry.

I have a window key on my bunch of keys. I always know where they are.

We have always done what you say actually for 20 years +. Every window locked when leave the house, keys not kept in locks of doors (otherwise burglar smashes window and pushes hand through to get key to open door.

I have had two cases (big business law cases) where both insurers tried to get out of payig under a policy, they had something ilke 15 "excuses" in one of them, they paid up part of the sums under protest without admitting liability but it certainly made me realise if they want to get out of paying under a policy they are past masters at coming up with an excuse.

Mary agree with you bout insurers and i know risk we taking on by leaving windows unlocked when it comes to insurance coverage... but so frustrating that what if u forget to unlock windows before you sleep and there is a fire... i am going to add big keychain to all windows keys and luckily we have many keys so can leave one in every room... hubby and i decided we would make it a habit to lock during day and unlock escape at night. also how can small children unlock windows if anything happens to adults. just frustrated that we cant just keep handle closed at all times without having to double lock.
