BBC link. Holy shit, almost the entire building is ablaze. Hope everybody got out safely.

whattodowith I think there is going to be some dreadful news to come.

The faulty wiring and power surges the residents warned about, and the terrible fire advice - I don't have the words really.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 14/06/2017 05:50

Concrete doesn't burn but that's one small part of the building fabric - possessions, older soft furnishings, insulation etc unfortunately all do.

New buildings are so strict on such things for this very reason.

It's utterly horrifying if even some of the management issues are true. Sadly it seems unlikely that there won't be people who didn't make it out.

Catminion · 14/06/2017 05:51

I'm a few hundred metres away, the centre of the building is still alight.

The outside of the building was refurbished quite recently - I hope that is not connected to the fire's spread.

Poor people. At best homeless - how is RBKC going to rehouse them. There must have been people trapped as well.

Fucking council.

Lessthanaballpark · 14/06/2017 05:52

Bloody hell that blog is awful. There was a fire in 2013 caused by a series of power surges and the management did nothing except post a notice telling the residents to stay in their flats in the event of a fire. Shock

I don't know if I can bear to watch the news.

cynicbuthappy · 14/06/2017 06:03

The point of a concrete structure is that, whilst an individual unit can burn because of internal contents, the fire shouldn't spread.
The rapid spread of this fire suggests a massive internal electrical fault that affected multiple flats, or a catastrophic design fault.

DoctorTwo · 14/06/2017 06:18

I don't remember ever seeing a building go up like that. Or one that burnt out so quickly. It's horrific.

Good god, that is terrible. Hard to imagine how it's possible - and so quickly, meaning surely many people won't have been able to get out. Just awful.

Ifailed · 14/06/2017 06:22

The rapid spread of this fire suggests a massive internal electrical fault that affected multiple flats, or a catastrophic design fault.

Or worse, it was deliberate.

MrsJayy · 14/06/2017 06:27

Just switched the tv on and saw this it is awful

CaveMum · 14/06/2017 06:31

According to the BBC article, Police said they were still evacuating people from the block at 4am so I'm praying that the majority of residents got out.

Radio 2 news bulletin said that 30 people have been taken to hospital.

SuperBeagle · 14/06/2017 06:37

How horrible. Those poor people.

I've never seen something like that. One or two apartments in a block? Sure. An entire building engulfed? Never. Horrifying.

Upsideout · 14/06/2017 06:41

I hope the building management never sleep again. I hope they think of the people they have done this too every single night whilst they rot in prison. Those poor tenants.

CocoaLeaves · 14/06/2017 06:41

I am praying for the least worst outcome hereSad This is truly dreadful.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 14/06/2017 06:41

Holy shit I used to live there!!Sad

Catminion · 14/06/2017 06:43

We woke up about 4am. It was well alight then. It sits in the middle of an estate, so I imagine they evacuated the whole lot.

DH has just gone to work, police everywhere like they are expectting a riot.

Fuck, I can remember when the tower was built and have known many people there over the years, my GP was there. Unbelievable.

FreakOfNurture · 14/06/2017 06:43

Once before I saw something like this, at this speed.

It was the materials used in the building - flammable. It was the 1970s.

Catminion · 14/06/2017 06:49

Believe me the RBKC council treats the non-rich with contempt. That estate has been earmarked for redevelopment, though residents have fought back. Infested with cockroaches, asbestos etc which the council dragged their feet over.

Personally I think it is something to do with the refurb. They changed the outside and put what look like plastic squares under the windows.
I am sure there have been fires there before but they haven't spread.

MrTumblesbitch · 14/06/2017 06:49

I've just seen this and come to find a thread. Those poor people, why on earth would they advise people to stay in their flats when there is a fire? I don't understand!

megletthesecond · 14/06/2017 06:52

Why wasn't there a central fire alarm? I used to work for the fire service (office not operational) and this shouldn't happen Sad.

FreakOfNurture · 14/06/2017 06:52

Fire and Rescue advice where I live is, 'Get Out. Stay Out. Call Us Out.'

MrsJayy · 14/06/2017 06:52

The were saying on the news that they had insulating cladding put on recently i am assuming it was that.

TheFirstMrsDV · 14/06/2017 06:52

Those poor people. They have lost everything.
They won't be able to salvage anything from that building.
All their possessions. All their documents.
What help is there now for people suffering this sort of catastrophic event?

I can't bear to think about those trapped inside.

Its just appalling. I hope against all reason that everyone got out.

FreakOfNurture · 14/06/2017 06:53

So not only dodgy wiring and flammable cladding but no fire alarm and no sprinklers?

Catminion · 14/06/2017 06:55

DDs friend lives next door and they only saw about 60 people come out - the fire fighters could not get in. Might be scare mongering but it looks horrific.

MrsJayy · 14/06/2017 06:57

11 floors of flats (i think) all those people Sad
