i know you said the internet. i was just adding another 'con' to the list.

paulaplumpbottom · 19/03/2007 21:42

I imagine at some point in time when they can improve reception people might do away with their residential landlines as well

FrannyandZooey · 19/03/2007 21:50

Sorry I don't think I am keeping up very well myself tonight

I haven't got one and neither has DH. We are probably the only couple on the planet, but neither of us wants one.

AitchYouBerk · 19/03/2007 21:54

bless. it'll be all the interference from the pylons...

Fauve · 19/03/2007 21:58

I'm currently researching the safest mobile phones to have, so I can let my 13yo ds have one. I'll post about it when I've got my stuff togehter, but if anyone else has done any research, let me know

They have a mobile phone mast on top of a water tower nearby, actually

so they are irradiating the water, if I am not very much mistaken?

I haven't got one and don't want one for the same reason as fizzbuzz. DH has one, mostly for work reasons.

I think you're worrying unnecessarily about the water, Franny. For one thing, the signal goes outwards not downwards (so people who live in flats under masts aren't affected) and for another, I can't imagine what it could possibly be doing to the water.

Fauve, I think the distraction and mugging risks are considerably higher than those from non-ionizing radiation, particularly if you are not too generous with top-ups. I shall continue to hold out against giving my son one (he doesn't actually want one, and would almost certainly have the sense to keep it turned off so I couldn't use it to keep tabs on him, even if I wanted to...)

paulaplumpbottom · 20/03/2007 08:51

Did you hear that the church of England is probably going to make churches take theirs down because they could be transmitting porn, gambling, etc.

Fauve · 20/03/2007 09:08

That is an argument against 3G and 4G masts - they're for phones which aren't just for messaging, but for sending/watching videos and photos. There is coverage for ordinary phones in lots of areas, so new masts there shouldn't be necessary, but they're sprouting up like triffids in a very aggressive roll-out supported by the government. Local planning depts are even cross about it.

I'm also an anti-mast campaigner, and I haven't got one [righteous emoticon]

I have two - a work one - so have to have it and my own which is oh four years old....its pay as you go and I rarely charge it......HATE the things with a passion and hate the fact people think if you have one you HAVE to answer it...

paulaplumpbottom · 20/03/2007 09:59

I hate the way people stop calling my land line. If I'm at home I don't have my mobile phone switched on.

Ripeberry · 20/03/2007 13:35

I have a mobile phone and can make £10 pay as you go last for over 1yr.
I never text and only have it for emergencies.
People think that a mobile phone frees them to do other things but it is just a ball and chain.
It does NOT give you freedom.
AB.

I don't have one ,but then i'm a billy-no-mates!

sunnywong · 20/03/2007 14:14

I caved in and got one in November
only because I started working

Always text in the full Queen's English and don't have a camera on it. Nokia equivalent of two tin cans on a piece of string. Suits me and all.
