I am quite surprised. Not just from the wastefulness but the cost of the shopping that could be saved. I really bet the savings would mount up over the year.

This year I have started online shopping, I plan all the meals we have and only buy what i think we need, because im in the house when i order, i can run and check what we have if im not sure, also I dont buy unnecessary items because the kids are nagging the legs off me . There are always online discount offers too which i use. I save on average £30 per week now on my original shopping bill which over the year is £1560.00. Enough for our family holiday

We have a compost bin and a dog. That takes care of most leftover food.
Love the idea of a shelf in the fridge for stuff closest to use-by-date.

I end up with lettuces shoved to the back, out of sight, and by the time I find them they are brown and slimy (urgh)

Must get more organised, meal plan etc...

Also bubble and squeak is what leftovers are for. I'm made more cakes from leftover roast veg than I can count.

how does it cause greenhouse gases.

does everything cause greenhouse gases?

a seriously HUGE **

expatinscotland · 19/03/2007 12:05

People do, too, custy, by exhaling CO2.

How long before Brown decides to tax us for breathing?

Tortington · 19/03/2007 12:05

where do the supermarkets dump their mass bought off fruit?

do they hae a giant compost heap?

paulaplumpbottom · 19/03/2007 12:08

Don't give him any ideas Expat.

expatinscotland · 19/03/2007 12:12

Big business is a different kettle of fish, custy.

The government's strategy is to go after the little guy in a vain hope this will deflect attention away from the waste big business produces.

Tortington · 19/03/2007 12:17

i am deflected not.

what premium do the supermarkets pay for what must be a huge food waste?

PussinWellies · 19/03/2007 12:29

Custy: the thing about rotting waste in huge heaps is that you get a lot of methane that way. Methane is seriously bad news as a greenhouse gas, because it has around 20 times the effect that carbon dioxide does (per molecule, I mean). If you comost stuff in smaller heaps where lots of air can circulate, you get a lot less methane per soggy lettuce.

I wouldn't worry about breathing... that's more a case of recycling carbon that you ate earlier.

Really must get off MN and do some work.

Tortington · 19/03/2007 12:53

and the supermarkets?

stoppinattwo · 19/03/2007 19:55

MY DP produces lots of methane........perhaps i should compost him into smaller heaps [manic grin]

sorry custy that doesnt answer your point about the supermarkets does it
