Did anyone else see this article in one of the sunday telegraph? The government and local councils want to make it illegal to photograph your own children in a public place - parks, school events etc. A welsh council has already tried to implement it but luckily turned it down at a last minute vote as they thought it would be really difficult to implement. This is soooooo crazy ... please go to this link at the 10 downing street website to sign their petition to stop this legislation.

expatinscotland · 13/03/2007 12:35

why?

that's daft!

what if you live in a crappy place and would rather pose your children for photos in one of our lovely parks or historical places?

staceym11 · 13/03/2007 12:46

nicnaksmum · 13/03/2007 12:50

There was a story in out local news recently about how a dad got his camera (or film)... can't remember which.... convescated for taking photos of his son at a football match! Not quite sure who it was taken by ... think it might have been the teacher.

signed - completely mental!

KathyMCMLXXII · 13/03/2007 12:56

Can you link to the Telegraph article? I couldn't find it and don't want to sign without understanding more of the background. The petition site doesn't give much info.

Thanks.

Kelly1978 · 13/03/2007 12:58

oh fgs, this is getting absurd.

We went to battersea park at the weekend. Took my camera, wanted to get some good pics of the kids. Int he playground I was told to turn it off - not allowed to take pictures in there. I was only taking pictures of my own kids, I don't even want other people's children in the frame!

nicnaksmum · 13/03/2007 13:00

Here is the article.... sorry still can't do proper links..

from the petition i get
"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Stop proposed restrictions regarding photography in public places"

which is quite different.

of course i dont want people to photograph my children

be careful of what you sign.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 13/03/2007 13:13

the artacle is completely different to the "government" link, so as usual the petition is someone taking everything out of context and blowing it all out of proportion. and just because it's on the downing street website does not make it a government link - anyone can put a petition up there.

some of the logic behind who should and shouldn't be able to take photographs of who is to do with incidents where children have been photographed and those childrens' faces have been super-imposed onto the bodies of other children in horrific situations and those pictures then being sold on to child porn sites.

it's possible, and it does happen.

nicnaksmum · 13/03/2007 13:18

I agree wanna ... horrible things do happen with people taking photos of other peoples children. How do you police that against taking pictures of your own children though??

OP posts:
Tortington · 13/03/2007 13:21

i would rather ban photography in local parks than think that some fucked up person took a photo of my son or daughter and people are wanking over it or planning to do something terrible to them.

i'm very anti loss of freedom i truly am.

southeastastra · 13/03/2007 13:25

i remember years ago seeing a bloke videoing childing at ally pally, he was hidden in the bushes. i was too scared to say anything to him.

KathyMCMLXXII · 13/03/2007 13:29

I wonder how many child abductions involve photos being taken first as part of the planning process. Genuine question - I have no idea.

The idea of someone wanking over photos of your children is of course utterly, utterly repellant, but I disagree that the small chance of that is worse than the loss of freedom to take your own photos.
It's only a picture. Our culture doesn't believe that photos steal a bit of your soul.

TenaLady · 13/03/2007 13:35

I thought that it was already in place. Ive always had to ask permission to take a photo where there are other kids around and the answer was a definate NO from the swimming pool when I wanted to vid a shot of my 3m old on his first swim

RubberDuck · 13/03/2007 13:46

I'm guessing that councils and the government will be perfectly within their rights to take photographs of our children via CCTV still though... funny that.

bambi06 · 13/03/2007 13:50

nannystate looms even bigger

lenaschildminding · 13/03/2007 13:52

Has the world gone totally mad?

Photo's of milestones in our little treasures lives to look back on will soon be a thing of the past if this happens. Already, we cannot photograph our kids first strokes when they learn to swim, we can't video their performance in the school nativity play, now they want to stop us taking photos in the park or at a family picnic! Whats next, no cameras at theme parks? No cameras at childrens farms or zoo's, no cameras on the beach, no cameras at you childs birthday party? hey, why not ban cameras all together!!!

For god's sake, it's all getting too much. If I didn't take all the photo's of my precious DS1, who sadly passed away aged 5, what would I have to help me remember the happy times in the park, on the beach, at the zoo, in the pool and those precious birthdays we hoped and prayed he'd reach, rather than the painful memories of his battle againstr cancer?

WE NEED OUR PHOTO'S....SIGN THE PETITION NOW!!! TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS...I HAVE!!!

Actually, this is making me really angry. Can't we kick these pillocks OUT already
