-----------
In the first development of its kind anywhere in the world, Southampton plans to beam 15-mile-long lasers from its clock tower every night for five years in an attempted to "rebrand" the city and "nourish" its "physical appearance". Its example is expected to be followed by other cities.
-------------I'm not a resident of Southampton. I am lucky enough to have moved to the country and now realise how great it is to be able to (not) see the night - here you see stars and the moon and not a lot else, no streetlights, no light pollution.
I used to live in London, and so I know how horrible it can be to never see the real darkness. Besides the impact on the environment this will totally bugger up the local kids chances of getting to sleep and when they all get ASBOs someone will say 'it's the schools/parents/societies fault', rather than 'well perhaps if we weren't shining a ficking light at then 24/7 they'd be able to get some kip and be less grumpy.
AND they are spending £250K on this - when their health service AND schools are in deficit!
GRRRRRR!!!!
I've emailed their 'customer relations' folks to tell them what I think of their idea. If you agree, please do the same.
