A woman I work with wasn't feeling well and dr suggested she might be pregnant, confirmed that she was and dr sent her for a scan where they discovered she was 29 weeks pregnant. She wasn't showing at this point but once it was confirmed and everyone knew she suddenly looked pregnant, weird.

it dont surprise me my mothers friend gave birth while eating a packet of crisps when she was asked for her pregnancy records she told them to p off because she wasnt pregnant they had to show her the baby to prove it she didnt feel one contraction never put on weight periods normal no soreness or the normal pregnancy stuff she just said she kept fancying crisps

I have a friend who is head of an early years centre. So you'd expect her to know a thing or two about pregnancy. She has three daughters, one of whom gave birth totally unexpectedly. I asked my friend if she had suspected her dughter might be pregnant and she said not at all. He daughter had probs with her periods and had a big build anyway. My friend saw her daughter days before she gave birth and still didn't put two and two together. The birth was fine and the baby was healthy.

This happened to my cousins friend. They were part of a steeplechasing team & were on their way down to London to take part in some eventing. On the way,one of the girls was eating Mars bars & by the time they got to their hotel, was complaining of stomach cramps & feeling pretty dreadful. She blamed the chocolate.

One of the other girls was a nurse & called an ambulance. When she was examined in hospital & told she was actually in labour, she couldn't believe it.She had a 5lb baby girl.

She had been riding cross country, jumping 9ft fences for the entire time still fitted into her jodphurs too & not realised. She had also split up with her boyfriend some months back & a baby was the last thing on her mind.

My cousin & I were talking both stunned that she didn't know she was pregnant & couldn't work out how she hadn't noticed. Then a few years later,my cousin had a check up after feeling unwell for some months & found that she was 4 months pregnant. It does seem to happen a lot.

These stories are very off-putting, I'm never having conjugal relations again

My grandmother didn't know that she was pg with my father (her sixth baby) as her periods didn't stop. She was assisting a friend with a delivery and the doctor had to be called out (this was in the '20s). He said, well Mrs X I'll be helping you next, as he recognised that she was pg, and it was news to her!

jampot · 24/07/2004 21:42

I really believe that you can "tune out" symptoms. DH and I told his parents when I was pregnant at 20-21 weeks with our first and I was still wearing my size 10 normal jeans and showed no signs at all of being pregnant. Then suddenly I grew virtually overnight.

jampot · 24/07/2004 21:43

No outward signs I mean, obviously felt crap and had sore boobs etc but it wasn't obvious to anyone else

Bibiboo · 27/07/2004 16:01

I read somewhere (probably in a womans mag in Drs surgery) that some women have a uterus that tilts backwards, and that can cause baby to be hidden. How strange. I'm wishing I had a backwards uterus as am totally fed up of people commenting on how HUGE I am, but MW says I am normal for 6 months.

prettycandles · 27/07/2004 16:37

Well I have a uterus that tilts backwards, and not only did I know that I was pg before I could do any tests, but I changed shape so quickly that I needed maternity trousers by 8-10w each time! So I'm not convinced by that argument!

daisy1999 · 27/07/2004 16:42

Absolutely impossible to be pregnant and not know! While I'm here can anyone help diagnose a problem for me - swollen, tender breasts; periods stopped; gone off coffee; sick every morning; and a huge belly??? oh dear just wet myself and strange pains coming every 5 mins!

starry · 27/07/2004 17:18

A friend of mine, hid her pregnancy from her mothr when she was just 19. She's split from her boyfriend when she was 3 months and just couldn't face up to the pregnancy. Her mother only found out she was pregnant when she heard her groaning in bed one night and went in to find her in full blown labour. The healthy baby was born within an hour from 1st contraction.

When I was pregnant with ds1 I didn't show till I was 6 months and even after we moved house my new next door neighbour didn't notice I was pregnant at 8 months wearing combats and a vest top! I have a photo of me 2 weeks before I gave birth wearing same clothes and although I do have a bump it is tiny. I also bought size 8 trousers at 8 months pregnant. I could have eeasily hidden it from others but could never have not known I was pregnant as the baby was o active all the time.

tinytoes · 04/08/2004 22:38

size 8 trousers at 8 months pregnant-
think this is more amazing than not knowing you are pregnant!!
starry im!!
havent had a pair of size 8s for years!

ChicPea · 04/08/2004 22:56

Prettycandles, I have a womb that tilts backwards according to my gynae. What does that mean exactly?

Skate · 26/08/2004 22:54

Me too - it means the top of the uterus is further back than the bottom and this is the case in about 20% of women I think. It usually tilts the other way. I've read it can make it harder to conceive but I've not found that. No way does it mean you can 'hide' a pregnancy easier either - I've looked far more pregnant than my weeks, iykwim, every time (on babe 3 now due any day). It's been very obvious I'm pregnant by about 12 weeks!!!

ChicPea · 26/08/2004 22:58

I was also told by my gynea who was trying to persuade me to have a coil fitted (no thanks!) that if the fitting it doesn't know about the tilting uterus then the coil fitting experience can be more painful. Did you know this? Congrats by the way, when is No 3 due?

ChicPea · 26/08/2004 22:58

meant to say .. if the person fitting it...

Twinkie · 27/08/2004 09:08

Bloody hell maybe I'm not pregnant and just have really really bad wind!!!

Cannot for the life of me believe that people actually don't realise they are pregnant - and I think if they do if is unfair to the highest degree - I want them to have terrible rib pains, constipation, indigestion, trouble sleeping and generally feel like the back end of a bus too!!

Skate · 27/08/2004 09:51

Chicpea - baby was due on 22nd and I'm in labour at the moment!! Midwife came out this morning and am 4cm - wasn't dilated at all when she came last night (had v.quick labour with babe 2 so a bit paranoid about any sort of pain!!). Needless to say, I am scared witless knowing it will probably be today.

Twinkie · 27/08/2004 09:51

OOOOOOOOOOOOO Skate congratulations!!!!!!
