Britain's biggest landlord bans 'coloured people' because of 'the curry smell'

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/29/britains-biggest-landlord-bans-coloured-people-curry-smell/

In an email to a letting agent acting on his behalf Mr Wilson, who runs a property empire in Kent, said: “No coloured people because of the curry smell at the end of the tenancy.”

When contacted by The Sun Mr Wilson defended his comments, saying : “To be honest, we’re getting overloaded with coloured people. It is a problem with certain types of coloured people — those who consume curry — it sticks to the carpet.

It's like everything is returning to the 1950s. Angry

"No Irish
No Blacks
No Dogs"

Today of all days, we've woken up in the 1950s.

I dont really know why people get so het up when they see something like this and in a nutshell there is absolutely nothing you can do. Whether it comes to renting achoose, giving someone or even picking a football team you can still basically choose who you like.
Its when someone says it then everyone kicks up!
Really is there anyone out there who thinks it works any different?

Makes me laugh it does

Ah well, Highliving some of us think racism is wrong, get angry about it and want to stop it. Some of us even have brown skin Shock

Yuck. I wouldn't piss on him if he burst into flames.

pensillll · 29/03/2017 13:27

hardcore I saw that interview! The interviewer and the landlord kept getting more and more confused, with the landlord insisting 'no, no I will not accept agents' but with his accent it sounded like 'Asians'. He couldn't get his head around why he was being called racist for a private let Grinwhen it all became clear the two of them were buckled laughing!

ILoveDolly · 29/03/2017 13:32

I've lived in a few rented houses which stank, of mould, of chip fat, of dogs. I'd rather a nice lingering memory of curry tbh.

catastrophe,

God, I just read your linked articles.

What a truly delightful couple he and his wife seem:
I hope their millions bring them joy, because it clearly hasn't brought them a sense of moral decency, or respect for the Law.

(I'm told by a Kent-based friend he also authors children's books (WTAF?)
I'm guessing they're not themed on tolerance and compassion... Hmm

picklemepopcorn · 29/03/2017 14:07

At first glance this is awful. However, I visited a neighbour's house after a family moved out. The carpets had been shampooed and many of the walls repainted. The smell of curry was stronger than the smell of paint. I wouldn't have wanted to move in myself.

The point i am trying to make is that you can harp on about as much as you like but any case of discrimation is hard to prove unless you advertize it-In the UK especially when it comes to renting.
Whether you want to keep a dog or cat, on benefits or you are merely too fat and might break the toilet seat there is no reason you can prove that even if you tick all the other boxes.
This is speaking as someone who has experienced it. You know that is why you are refused but cant prove it but then who would want to be a renter off someone who does not want you?

Nicotina · 29/03/2017 16:34

Having a cat and being refused accommodation on that basis is NOT the same as being non-white and being refused accommodation on that basis.

It will again depend if there is an individual who could prove they had been discrimated against as he had given an instruction which may have not actually yet happened

MaryTheCanary · 01/04/2017 06:47

Indian food DOES have a real tendency to get into soft furnishings. A friend of mine who rents property had a real nightmare experience with a tenant who cooked lots of curryhad to replace curtains and carpets, even after hiring professional cleaning machines and fabric shampoos... but people can't use that as a reason to ban certain ethnic groupsit's discriminatory.

I think the friend in question ended up instilling some kind of automatic ventilation system that goes on whenever the cooker goes on, and put up signs around the house about keeping the kitchen door closed when cooking and opening windows. There are all sorts of ways to make this manageable.

MaryTheCanary · 01/04/2017 06:48

To be honest though, my friend's experience has put me off cooking curry in my home---though I do love it. I eat it in restaurants instead!

EnormousTiger · 01/04/2017 17:50

It is very very smelly though We have loads of Indian friends and as soon as you go in the door you smell it. It would have been better if the ad said no one who cooks curry and then name the other foods which cause the problem. I detest curry and would never cook it but it'a apparently British people of all colours' favourite dish so describing things as a ban on Asians rather than a ban on people who cook food which is so hard to remove from the property after was silly mistake.

Someone asked up thread if you can ban tenants on housing benefits. Most mortgages prohibit the landlord from letting to anyone on benefits so yes you can ban tenants on housing benefits just as you can ban animals and just as you can prefer a couple in full time work on high wages without children.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 04/04/2017 12:15

I've lived in a few rented houses which stank, of mould, of chip fat, of dogs. I'd rather a nice lingering memory of curry tbh.

I bought a house that smelt of curry years ago. It took ripping out all of the carpets, removing all of the wallpaper, painting all of the ceilings and then five years later replacing the kitchen to fully get rid of the smell. And I can assure you it isn't a 'nice, lingering memory'.

howrudeforme · 07/04/2017 22:51

He is a professional landlord and doesn't want to rent to Asians as he feels he has to deep clean his properties and that puts a dent in his profits.

He seems inarticulate and a penny pinching prick landlord rather than racist. (And I say this as someone of Asian origin).

But the issue of racism and agencies is important. In the 80s it transpires that employers would get around equality regulations by using employment agencies (so the agency would be discriminatory, not the employer).

Seems the same for letting agencies.

I'm a landlord and when current tenant decides to leave I'll get another. My issue is that they pay rent on time and for this they should enjoy the property as their own. There is wear and tear of course and I feel cooking smells come under that.
