OP posts:

Gosh, I am suprised he has a fee! They are always talking about everyone giving their time for free, yet all along he was being paid? How starnge.

He says he would do it for nothing - so why not decline or have it all donated to the charity itself?

thunk · 04/03/2007 18:12

i always thought wogan was a prig. this confirms it for me.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/03/2007 18:16

This is nothing new with Children in Need.

macneil · 04/03/2007 18:32

It's a bit nuts, but so nonsensical and inconsequential and it's such a great charity. Even the worthier ones take out their administration costs, but I think Children In Need is unique in that the BBC covers the admin and pays for everything so that genuinely every pound you give is given whole to the cause. Also the little films they show all evening make me cry. I always think I have to give a tenner for every time they manage to make me blub.

ForeverBlowingBubbles · 04/03/2007 18:47

He says he never asked to be paid and it comes out of the programs budget, not from the charitable donations, but still.... if no one else on the show gets paid why should he?

FBB

divamumplus · 04/03/2007 19:21

yep, he havent got the ball to say no and do charity, because its all about money
i do charity on m own way

tribpot · 04/03/2007 19:24

How weird. What's the honorarium for? (What even is an honorarium?)

paulaplumpbottom · 04/03/2007 19:56

I imagine he'll turn it down tommorow. He should be ashamed

AitchTwoOh · 04/03/2007 20:00

surely the rest of the production team get paid? that project must take ages and be people's jobs, iykwim? i don't think TW is that different, really.

beansprout · 04/03/2007 20:02

A recent survey showed that about 40% of the British public think that charity workers are not paid. A lot of people have some very naive ideas about how fundraising works!

MerlinsBeard · 04/03/2007 20:03

All of DP's best paid jobs have been charity gigs

Hulababy · 04/03/2007 20:08

I have no problem with charity workers being paid TBH, but I have a problem with being misled. All the time we are told on CIN that everyone gives their time freely, but do they???

AitchTwoOh · 04/03/2007 20:22

oh i think he should give the money back, but this was probably a deal struck a hundred years ago with tel and his agent, long before CIN was a known quantity. the fact that it's only gone up with inflation suggests that he's not exacly been pushing for a renegotiation, doesn't it?
and he's really, really not being paid for five hours work, he's a pro but i'm inclined to think that there's a bit more work in it than that.

fransmom · 04/03/2007 20:28

i guess an honorarium is similar to a token payment for services rendered. but 10 grand is a bit much. he should've donated along with the rest of us.

nearlythree · 04/03/2007 20:28

I agree with Aitch. I hate watching CiN with a passion but will carry on giving them dosh. I have no idea how much TW gives to charity each year and don't care - he def. puts in a lot of work for it.

And remember he lost a baby himself.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/03/2007 20:52

I never watch it. Its grating

Hulababy · 04/03/2007 21:16

Completely off track I know - but I never knew that about TW. But yes, he and his wife has a babl girl in 1965 but she had serious heart problems and died in hospital before they got chance to go home. Very asad

I'd be concerned about "everyone" giving their time for free on this or any other charity project if I thought it applied to all the technicians, cleaners, catering staff, office juniors etc. Who are not likely to be in a position to work for free. Even moderately famous people can sometimes be unable to work for no money on any given project, because they're much more famous than they are rich.

sunnysideup · 05/03/2007 22:41

I would have thought also that it's probably way more than 7 hours work, I imagine his work on the show would involve weeks or even months of meetings, rehearsals, pre-publicity etc etc etc.

I don't see that his fee is any different to people who work for charities providing services. The service he provides is to enable the fund raising evening to get the optimum amount of funds.

nearlythree · 06/03/2007 16:17

Just think this is typically nasty DM story about nothing but designed to wind people up. No doubt a few people will stop donating b/c of it.
