Of course these cases are exactly the sorts of cases we can well do without when we've scrapped all our employment rights. It's very un-British to allow selfish employees to hinder company profits this way.

Well no actually, not in this case, 'self employment' was simply used as a more effective way of controlling and administering a mobile workforce working without close supervision. It was a perfectly legitimate (and seemingly fair) arrangement, except that they don't seem to have paid for a competent lawyer to write their contracts and explain the boundaries of the contractor/subcontractor arrangement they were trying to achieve.
