Confessions of a Full Time Mother

"Kirsty Gunn is not working on her next novel. She is not a columnist for the London Review of Books. She has chosen instead to disappear from the professional world and embrace a domestic life just as rich and interesting and inspiring ... "

PAH! She's opted out of the professional world - well except for this article and the book she has just written about her "year as a full time mum" - full time that is, except for the 30 hours a week that her children are at school in which I presume she fannies about writing drivel like this.

At first I thought it was an ironic joke, but sadly not. Perhaps she is friends with that woman who survived the concentration-camp conditions of Fulham after that breeze blew her wooden grapes off the sideboard...

"To kiss the bruised knee at the moment when the knee is bruised - this has been my choice."

OK I got this far (end of first paragraph), lost my lunch (and the will to live). Truly dreadful wirting, it's unreadable. I tried picking it up in a few places. Couldn't.

As for the poem. Good grief.

Who are these people?

The only mother I've been able to read writing about her children is Charlotte Moore.

Jimjams2 · 24/02/2007 17:03

PMSL cross posted with the last 2 posts.

Gobbledigook · 24/02/2007 17:06

God, I can't get past the first para - the writing is shocking, never mind the content!

AnnabelCaramel · 24/02/2007 17:07

This is absolutely the funniest thing I have ever read on Mnet. She must be on some sort of illegal substances surely?

filthymindedvixen · 24/02/2007 17:08

I work school hours with 2 kids at school and my house is always a war zone. But I'm just a bone idle slut who would always rather be reading than hoovering...

pmsl at Marthamoo's version

filthymindedvixen · 24/02/2007 17:14

Why do some women have to kick up some great big song and dance about doing what millions of women do, and have done for ever? yes it's hard, sometimes rewarding, sometimes great fun, sometimes bone-grindingly boring. But so is every part of life...

That was truly vomit-worthy. I couldn't face the poem

This line was my favourite:
"All I do know is that I myself am burned through by my daughters' flames"

Truly pretentious crap.

Really who are these people, where do they find them?

ScummyMummy · 24/02/2007 17:22

We really, really need a puke emoticon, imo.

pesme · 24/02/2007 17:23

the poem! i started to read it and felt ill with embarrassment. this has to be a joke

foxybrown · 24/02/2007 17:25

ha ha ha! it really was a load of b**cks! whereas I support anyone who takes on this role, there's no need to crap on about it in this way. She's not doing anyone any favours, is she? MMoos made for much more entertaining reading.

Amazed she had enough time to look after her ankle-biters with all that navel gazing.

HuwEdwards · 24/02/2007 17:38

I actually thought it was a thoroughly researched, excellently written piece of journalism.

kiskidee · 24/02/2007 17:43

thank god i didn't buy the guardian today. i wouldn't want to encourage unreadable shoite like this.

TenaLady · 24/02/2007 17:46

You really did Huw but you just dont want to admitt it

Well, not one for following the crowd, I kind of liked it. A lot of stuff there hit some of my buttons.

Just my opinion though

Twiglett · 24/02/2007 17:49

is it wrong that I can't be bothered to read it but would still like to comment?

arrrrooooogah!

yellowrose · 24/02/2007 17:50

There is something seriously wrong with motherhood and FEELINGS of motherhood if one has the burning desire to justify it in a long, waffly, boring, self-congratulatory article in the Guardian.

Twiglett · 24/02/2007 17:50

why do they publish trite like this

honestly

TenaLady · 24/02/2007 17:51

I think the problem is that a lot of mothers have given up on reflecting and recording how they feel. Just dont get the time. Still she managed it, good luck to her.

Twiglett · 24/02/2007 17:54

Superfluous Prose
Surely thy name is The Guardian Family Section

I've got it we should get them to publish fairyfly's x-arse's poetry

I think the editors are devoid enough of talent to think it has qualities beyond the laughable

what d'ya reckon?

yellowrose · 24/02/2007 17:55

But tena - why does one have to THINK about being a mother ? Can't one just have a maternal instinct in its purest form, to love and look after ones children without REFLECTING on it ?

It is our Western, industrialised, angst-ridden culture that gives us time to reflect upon things that are just pure human instinct.

TenaLady · 24/02/2007 17:58

Well, isnt it much nicer to capture the moments and reflect on them, surely that is what memories are made of. I think she has just gone a layer deeper and explored what her feelings really are.
