isn't it about time the world did something about North Korea?

In the news this morning: http://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2016/sep/09/north-korea-nuclear-test-suspected-after-huge-seismic-explosion-detected-live?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

North Korea tried another nuclear experiment that resulted in a heartquake that was felt all around the world. I don't get how it is possible this regime keeps bullying the rest of the world (not to mention the well-known appalling lack of human rights) and gets away with it.

Why?? Isn't it about time the rest of the world did something about it? Is it just me being naive?

Not much anyone can do

I've watched a couple of documentaries about North Korea and read about it. Nobody wants to piss China off, I think that's largely why NK is left alone

mindsweeper summed it up perfectly. I lived in South Korea and I could see North Korea on a clear day from my apartment. 14 kms is the division between Seoul and the North Korean border. That's 15 million people. Add the cost of unification (which South Korea and the us have been preparing for). It's best to wait for it to implode on its own

I actually don't think China has that much loyalty to NK. They keep killing Chinese border guards and military personnel. I honestly don't think China would lift a finger. It's the sheer cost of a military excursion there for no benefit. NK is mountains and rock. No acgricultiral land, no oil, no resources. It's worthless.

As others have said the answer is basically China. China have an interest in keeping North Korea going because it gives them a border between them and US allied South Korea. So China and North Korea have signed treaties to defend eachother if one is attacked, China supplies them with food, water and weapons and sends back defectors. China does have a plan on what to do with North Korean civilians and leaders if North Korea falls so their friendship may be slipping.

China doesn't give a shit about the humanitarian aspect of what's going on in NK, because their own human rights abuses and treatment of their own people is pretty appalling too. Enforced, late stage abortions just one of the examples.

Goldenhandshake

Exactly, and will be very discouraging of any country meddling with any other country's (themselves) human rights policy.

My take on it is that N Korea is just not worth it to anyone. China would throw N Korea under the bus in an instant if it was in its interests, but it's not, and they've got bigger problems. China does not want any instability in their backyard. They're negotiating a massively tricky socio-economic transition themselves plus, they don't want to have to test their military power "in front of everyone" and be seen to be lacking - Chinese army has basically never seen actual combat- last major engagement was in the 1960's I think (happy to be corrected on that, but I can't think of a more recent one).

I feel exactly the same OP although i can imagine being neighbours with China and their population issues the last thing they want is thousands of war refugees on their doorstep...its an evil regime...concentraction camps that are denied but confirmed on satellite images Angry
