having seen the news today about the terror plots to kidnap a british soldier, basically what is the country coming to?

are forces personnel and thier families going to have to watch their every move, check their cars before use and lie about what job they do?

are they going to have to tell thier children not to say what their mum or dad does as a job in case they become potential targets?

it all breaths of northern ireland, i thought we were past that and living in a more civilised society.

also what should the government do? it seems that a minority are repeatedly tarring the names and reputations of other ethnic minoritys in this country.

vnmum who has made this threat? is it a specific extremist group?

uwila · 31/01/2007 15:07

Link please

vnmum · 31/01/2007 15:13

sorry not good at links. its on sky news at the mo and has been on the main news on itv and bbc as the main headline.

it was an alleged plot by muslim extremists i think to kidnap a young muslim british soldier and torture and behead him on the internet, like has happened in iraq.

MI5 and other intelligence forces foiled the plot and raided this morning, im not sure if the kidnap was planned for today.

i think its shocking how things are going now.

i will trry and do a link

Thank God the plot was foiled. I can not understand what drives human beings to do such things.

paulaplumpbottom · 31/01/2007 16:03

Thats awful. I would imagine this will make servicemen very nervous.

LittleBoSheep · 31/01/2007 20:05

Takes us back to the bad old days of the IRA - I guess we all hoped our kids wouldnt have to grow up with this kind of threat.

Callisto · 31/01/2007 20:10

Dreadful, and presumably a muslim serviceman was targeted to 'discourage' other muslims from joining up?

I really feel for our armed forces personnel atm. They have had a really crappy deal from this govt and to have the threat of kidnap too. Not good at all.

Blandmum · 31/01/2007 20:13

I well remember the feeling when I first married dh, when the IRA stated that families of service personel as well as the service people themseves were 'legitemate targets'. They shot and killed the german wife of a man in the army We had armed paroles of the married quaters after that

Skyler · 31/01/2007 20:22

FWIW My DH is in the RAF and I just asked him about this and he hadn't even heard about it.
We have armed guards patrolling where we live, but we always have here. This sort of thing does make me glad I live 'behind the wire' though rather than in quarters that aren't I suppose, but I don't think we will be advised to be any more sensible than we are already. I wait to be corrected though.

I got told yesterday morning by a colleague not to read the news today (cause I get dead upset by things) so I have onyl just heard about this this morning on the radio.

saltire · 01/02/2007 09:55

It wasn't that long ago that we were issued with those things for looking under cars for bombs! I too thought we had passed those days by.
I however have always had a problem with the security (or lack of) at some bases. Where i live now, there is a hgih fence round some parts of the camp - where the single living blocks, sgts and Offciers mess etc are. Then there's the actual camp itself, if you walk a few metres down the road the fence changes from a high fence with barbed wire, to a low wooden fence. Anyone can climb it, and get onto camp and do goodness knows what.

vnmum · 01/02/2007 19:52

i have always felt more secure when living behind the wire but with the up and coming super garrisons, are they going to be a target for these kinds of terrorists?

my DH says that although the media want to report it, they have in fact given the terrorists what they want, publicity. maybe he has a point.

there have been no security briefings with our regiment and we have muslim soldiers serving with us.

i guess we'll wait it out and be aware of what is around us as always
