"beachcombers who have headed to the Devon and Dorset coasts hoping to salvage goods..."

And the steering wheels will be on ebay by sunset. Modern life is rubbish sometimes...

Tortington · 22/01/2007 13:28

it helped on the BBc news last night when they said that the cargo washed up contained abything from BMW motorbikes to hazardous material

yes

its all you bloody journalists that are responsible

itsmeNDP · 22/01/2007 13:30

There was alsorts on that ship. A fairly big consignment of the aforementioned BMW bikes, a car, medical supply packs, car parts, shoes, something that was guessed at being fertilizer. The major things they are concerned about from an environmental pov aside from the fuel the ship was carrying seems to be a lot of perfume and battery acid.

foxinsocks · 22/01/2007 13:32

yes, I bet they are marina

airy · 22/01/2007 13:40

I heard there was a shipment a wine on there....do you think it survived, I'd loot wine

ScummyMummy · 22/01/2007 13:46

Do you all really think it's that bad to loot/salvage in these circs? [poor morals emoticon] Sounds like fun to find nice free things and the owners will be insured and claim whether or not the stuff is 'recycled' in this way, won't they? Do I have a hopelessly criminal mind not to think this is massively bad behaviour?

Marina · 22/01/2007 13:50

It just seems too close to wrecking and piracy for my liking scummy. Would we feel the same if people were rummaging through the wreckage of a major road accident, I wonder...

CODNoMore · 22/01/2007 13:54

god i love mn thread diviations
this
looting nad butterfly lions

yesterday german interwar socialsim adn "here the widl thing s are"

ScummyMummy · 22/01/2007 14:00

Yes- I see what you mean, Marina. But it wasn't intentional like piracy and the boat and goods are goners already, aren't they, in that they will all have to be paid for regardless of whether people benefit from this unfortunate event? And no one was killed in the wreck, I think (though it sounds like they had a horrid time of it in the life raft, poor people) so it doesn't feel disrespectful in that way. I must admit I still feel more worried about the environmental damage than the looters per se though I am sure i must be wrong.

ScummyMummy · 22/01/2007 14:01

Agree cod- it is def one of the best things about mn.

CODNoMore · 22/01/2007 14:01

totall agree re the crash thing

Enid · 22/01/2007 14:02

i know people who have done this

so what?

useless bloody company wrecking the coastline, who cares if Ned down the road gets a free bike out of it

CODNoMore · 22/01/2007 14:04

tis theft enid
you knwo it

Marina · 22/01/2007 14:04

Oh I feel much more strongly about the environmental damage scummy !
I would honestly be there with a shovel and bucket if I lived locally/was free to travel, rather than dragging 10 steering wheels off a threatened beach, tbh.

Enid · 22/01/2007 14:05

the people I know who are doing it ARE environmental campaigners

they hve been down at the site ready to clear and clean

and taken stuff in a couple of cases

sorry I dont see whats wrong with it tbh

CODNoMore · 22/01/2007 14:06

no wsorry

the intention is to premantly deprive
its theft

Enid · 22/01/2007 14:07

yes I am sure it is

bogwobbit · 22/01/2007 14:10

Fair enough, to the letter of the law it's wrong but I think the real wrong that's being done here is the environmental one.
The ship in question had already run aground and then a few years later, after a cheap and(probably) botched up major repair in Vietnam, the same thing happens again. And we're quibbling about people helping themselves to a few things that have been washed up. Big deal!!
I'd do the same if I lived near enough, or rather I'd send dh to do it

CODNoMore · 22/01/2007 14:11

sorry enivironmental disateer does NOT equal permission to theive.

bogwobbit · 22/01/2007 14:16

I'm sure it doesn't but I just feel that people's anger at the thieves / beachcombers or whatever you want to call them is somewhat misplaced.

CODNoMore · 22/01/2007 14:17

well tis better htan gettting angry over jade non?

bogwobbit · 22/01/2007 14:17

In that it should be directed against the large companies that caused the disaster and not the 'little people' who profit in a very minor way, from it.

bogwobbit · 22/01/2007 14:18

And you're absolutely right about Jade.
Can't say any more because I (try) not to talk about her on a point of principle

ipodthereforipoor · 22/01/2007 14:21

I live nearby - anyone want anything in particular - will post and I accept paypal for p&p

TwoIfBySea · 22/01/2007 21:40
