Does anyone know why there is a raised terror alert from Irish Republicans?

Just that really. Surely we aren't going back to the bad old days of the IRA etc. I thought the Peace deal which was brokered letting terror leaders become politicians sorted things out for good.

Do we really want to go back to terror alerts everywhere? Never mind what the poor people of Ireland and Northern Ireland will need to deal with.

I don't understand what they want.

No one seems to have a clue what will happen with the border if we leave. Would it come down to a joint decision between the North and the South, or will the UK governmemt and the EU have to work it out?

Wiggles there was a viable bomb found in Cushendun at weekend. Which is tourist area, which is why I started stressing a little bit.

Wicked, the bomb was at side of road in tourist area.

Thanks for answering everyone. I hope everything stays ok for you all. I know it's much bigger deal than my wee holiday.

Yes, that bomb, see maybe my sense of perspective isn't to be relied on. Its up to you, like I said its no less safe than last year. I know more people visiting this year than in a long time. But if you're not going to enjoy your holiday then maybe rethink it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/05/2016 07:30

We will probably come as we would lose a lot if we cancelled. Will try and put it out of our heads. We had such a lovely time last year. Plus wouldn't want to give in to the threat etc. Hopefully will be fine. It's just a generally stressful time and last holiday we had was a nightmare so wanting some relaxation. I'm sure we will find it. Didn't want to come home last time :)

It would be an ad hoc agreement between the Irish and British goverments. Neither is a member of Schengen, so mainland EU is essentially unaffected. There's no precedent, so it'll be up to the Governments to sort it out pragmatically and in light of existing practice.

So I suppose correct to say no one knows, but that doesn't mean either chaos or unsuitable arrangements will inevitably follow.

EU would have nothing to gain from attempting to impede the Irish government in this (other than a bit of willy-waving) as the whole intent would be to continue existing arrangements for movement of people who would be subject to same level of checks on arrival on the island as they are now.

I haven't looked at the news recently, haven't been well the last few days and the news depresses me even more when I'm sick. Sad at the bomb in Antrim.

"Oliver McMullan, a Sinn Féin MLA for East Antrim, said "there was no logic to this act"

There really wasn't. I guess certain elements are determined to take us back to the "bad old days" of bombs in prominent places to make more of a point/impact.

I'd hoped my ds would listen to family stories of the troubles with utter disbelief, as those days would be so far behind us Sad I hope we won't be thrust back into the times when hotels, pubs and restraunts were targeted willy nilly. I can't even feel anxious about it. I guess growing up here has sort of normalised everything in my head.

Just had the most dreadful thought, what if they target one of the game of thrones sets while in use, for maximum publicity. Although I'm sure these locations are gone over with a fine tooth comb first!

I think the EU would be insisting on increased border security, the UK might though. Otherwise all the Europeans with right to live in work in Ireland will head there, and then nip across the border into NI/UK.

oliviaclottedcream · 19/05/2016 12:56

I think as long as there is a border there'll be those that feel violence is the only answer to get it removed.

FarAwayHills · 19/05/2016 16:48

With regards to travel, it was my understanding that there was a special agreement for travel within the UK, Channel Island and Rep of Ireland. When arriving at Gatwick from Ireland you skip the whole border control bit and arrive straight into the baggage hall. Previously there was a special faster lane at border control but now you just go straight through and I'm not sure if this is such a good idea under the circumstances Hmm
