Fat Dog case - so should the dog licence be bought back?

report on fat dog

So has anyone else been amazed by how these fuckwits have been allowed to keep this poor dog?

I heard them on the radio and they are so obviously not remotely sorry about what they did to the dog and have talked about how they will put it on a diet - grudgingly - but they didn't mention ensuring it gets enough exercise in future.

I just couldn't believe this one and immediately thought of all the Mumsnet threads about dogs recently and also that it's about bloody time they re-introduced the dog-licence so that people like this just aren't allowed to inflict this level of abuse on an animal.

poor dog, they should be banned at the v least from having other animals.

paulaplumpbottom · 12/01/2007 19:04

Thats awful. That poor dog must have never gotten any exercise at all. They should be banned and be given a heavy fine.

But when they had a licence all you had to do was go to the post office and hand over your [however much it was]. No one asked any questions (other than "do you have the cash?", I suppose) and no one looked at the dog. I don't see that reintroducing it would solve anything.

These blokes do sound like complete muppets, though.

I guess they never took the dog to the vet for it's annual check up either? (mine go as standard once a year min) perhaps if the licences were introduced then they should have a home check along with a vets check and the money as well iycwim. this is a reason i'd never bread from my bitch (not that I can now) but I'd want to do home checks and make sure her pups are well looked after, and such with follow ups but after the inital check it's not normally done.

I don't see why we need to have a licence on the same basis as before (35p and no questions asked).

If we wanted, we could insist that dog owners pass a "pet-care test", similar to the driving one, where they are forced to learn basic stuff like pack behaviour and the fact that a dog needs to be exercised and not fed on McDonalds!

I just can't believe these two blokes, I really can't. But there must be loads of people like these two twerps up and down the country.

thing is thou cal - we all passed our driving tests but how many of us honestly can say we'd pass it now - you do pick up bad habits. I feel that if that sort of thing we to happen it should be an annual thing and I personally wouldn't have any probs with an annual check.

Tortington · 12/01/2007 22:09

yeah only rich p[eople should have dogs

Caligula · 13/01/2007 01:00

Why only rich people? Exceptions or discounts could easily be made for those on a low income, and any responsible dog-owner would know full well that vets' fees would outweigh by miles the cost of a licence. (Compared to vets' fees, taxing a car is a snip.)

You don't even need a home check for a child.

HandyTrinkett · 14/01/2007 11:51

licencing with discounts available for properly trained dogs and owners! :-D

licencing could only really work if the cost of a licence was realistic, i.e. would pay for the scheme to be policed.
