aloha michael howard also called us cowards and lots of others, but hey we don't care,we didn't give in to terrorism we just didn't want to be part of this war and never wanted to have anything to do with bush and his lies, the man is sick

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2004 19:59

will not vote for TB...no way! lib dem or green i reckon. agree with you 100% aloha, and beetroot, am so so saddened and sickened by the whole thing that i almost can't bear to open a newspaper these days. the americans MUST vote bush out, it's a global catastrophe if they dont. and we must punish blair and withdraw our support when election time comes around...if this happens it will go down in history as a real example of democracy i.e. if you fck with the people by riding roughshod over their wishes and waging an unjust and illegal war you will* lose power...will make both countries and the world a safer place if this happens imo. if it doesn't god help us all

If there was a General Election tomorrow I'm truly terrified that the Tories would get in "by accident". For these elections, yes, I can protest vote but still don't know what I'd do if it was a GE. The thought of Oliver Letwin being in the government is horrific.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2004 20:05

so don't vote tory!!! if everyone who is sickened by blair and finds the tories odious votes either lib dem or green we'll have ourselves a new govt!

Tinker · 24/05/2004 20:08

I have no intention of ever voting tory but, sadly, there are enough people who do.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2004 20:11

say it again baby! no one can say that enough imo

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2004 20:11

the no intention bit, not the last part

aloha · 24/05/2004 20:36

Sophable, I feel like you - so sickened and heartsick of the whole thing that reading the paper makes me want to cry. Was the real Tony Blair a victim of invasion of the bodysnatchers or something? HOW can he look at all this and think he was right? HOW can he buddy up to torturer Bush? How can he live with himself knowing that he is responsible for so much evil?

JJ · 24/05/2004 20:47

Reading the Guardian online lead story this morning nearly made me sick with disgust. How could we have done that? Why isn't there the outrage in the US?

I'm dreading November. I've lost my faith in most Americans.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2004 21:03

the only thing keeping me going is that he has lost my vote...it's the only way i can not feel so impotent that i want to scream...

there are good people in the states: moveon.org here for a start - they are trying to raise funds to air a tv ad demanding rumsfeld is fired for a start: we like them

JJ · 24/05/2004 21:08

They aired it! Or they're airing it, I think .. ooh, here is the AP wire story. Do you read Salon ? It's really good, you'd like it, I think.

If anyone wants help registering for the US elections, please let me know.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2004 21:11

JJ do you read theonion.com? is f*cking funny...v close the bone sometimes tho...salon.com looks good.

Soph, yeah, I love the Onion. I went to school at Purdue in IN and they distributed it there. If you're not easily offended, you might like "Get Your War On" -- here's a link to the first comic (from 9 Oct 2001).. it helps to get a feel for it.

Not all of us are for Bush here. I was outraged voting in the primary elections because as a republican I only had the choice of Bush. Even though I am of the same political party, I didn't vote for him in the last election, so why would I want to now? I wrote in my vote for a can of tuna fish, because IMO, that would be a better choice to lead the country.

I just finished reading an article in the local paper about how Americans should maybe start thinking of pulling out of Iraq, not for humanitarian reasons, but because of Tony Blair. It basically said that if he is voted out, that there might be a united Europe that might be cheeky enough to go against what we want, and we should start doing all we can to appease them and maybe be able to keep Europe from stealing some of our "power". How sad is that?

JJ · 24/05/2004 21:42

How does Kerry-McCain sound to you, collinsmommy? It's my dream ticket.

I've read that Northern Europeans (mainly Scandinavia, I guess, think the author was travelling around there) are expecting Bush to get voted out, whereas I'm scared to death. My aunt reckons that it'll take 50 years to get out of the mess Bush got us into (not just Iraq). I hope it's less, but if he's not gone in Nov, I'll have lost hope.. which is something for me.

OldieMum · 24/05/2004 21:45

A bit off the original topic, but here's a thoughtful piece by Susan Sontag about the uses, and impact, of photography in the Irag war, from today's Guardian. here I find I can't get this story out of my mind.

A colleague of my husband's, who works in Washington, says that he has been told by congressmen who have seen the so-called 'secret' photos and videos of torture in Irag that the naked man who is seen cowering from dogs was then killed by them, on camera.

colinsmommy · 24/05/2004 21:48

Anyone else is getting my vote. Last election, I may have been the only Republican to vote for Ralph Nader, but this time I'll vote for Kerry just to make sure he gets all the votes he can.

It scares me to death that Bush might get re-elected this time without the controversy. At least now I can say he really didn't win with a majority. I am so disgusted with everything he does, and wonder if people can't see what a mess he has made of other countries, what he has done here at home. Ashcroft scares me even more than Bush does. I'll be truly embarrassed to say I am American if he gets elected.

gothicmama · 24/05/2004 21:51

it is moving i can not believe what is being done in the name of democracy I want one of those badges that says not in my name. Dh has linked all this to the football and is not buying an england shirt cos as he says he can wear it with pride for the football but not for anything else really.

Piffleoffagus · 24/05/2004 21:53

I get cross that the West seems to think that it knows what is best for another contry, while Saddam was obviously not ideal, surely the people of Iraq are able to sort out amongst themselves who they want, not without bloodshed but at least it would be their way.
I mean the US and the world at large is quite happy to turn a blind eye to countries slaughtering their own occupants...
The whole thing makes me scream with anger, please oh please let Bush get ousted next time, he is too dangerous to be allowed to continue...

gothicmama · 24/05/2004 21:55

agree piffle it is sad that at end of Golf war one we and US abandon an uprising because it was not convenient to support it.

Piffleoffagus · 24/05/2004 21:56

I am also referring to Palestine as well... Talk about US funded terrorism...

colinsmommy · 24/05/2004 21:59

Well said, Piffleoffagus

gothicmama · 24/05/2004 22:01
