Apparently if you hit one and you are injured you can get compensation

Good.

Blimey

It's darwins theory though isn't it? If you are not smart enough to live through your teens you don't get to procreate. Very sad for the young fellows family but fucking tragic for the motorcyclist to have to live with the reprocussions for the rest of his life.

fishie · 28/12/2006 23:57

i did that once or twice as a teenager. then thought about it and felt bad dreadful terrbile etc. government ad campaign is really good i think, although do any actual teens see it?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 28/12/2006 23:59

I think its fair.

Tragic, but fair.

ooer retract, i did not do that had not read link properly. i have walked in front of cars going fairly slowly to make them stop. bad, but not that bad.

unknownrebelbang · 29/12/2006 00:04

I have to drive past a bunch of children/teenagers playing chicken almost every afternoon on my way to pick my own children up from school, and it's quite frightening to see.

I would imagine the long-term psychological effects on the motorcyclist will be horrendous, quite aside from his physical injuries.

southeastastra · 29/12/2006 00:06

i haven't heard of children doing this! i'd stop and have a go if i saw them tbh it's insane

unknownrebelbang · 29/12/2006 00:13

I wouldn't.

I was a bit annoyed on the BBC site as to how they flagged this up. The headline read "Motorcyclist who killed 12 yo boy to sue for compensation". That gives a completely different impression from the actual facts. I was incensed at first, but then read the facts and thought it was completely fair.

Might have to stop telling my boys to go and play on the motorway when they annoy me, though .

paulaplumpbottom · 29/12/2006 12:05

Completely fair. I have seen kids do this not to far rom me. I wonder if the same can be applied to people who don't use crosswalks.

Ripeberry · 29/12/2006 13:59

I've had this done to me a few times, some kids (especially at night) deliberately walk slowly in front of your car and almost force you to swerve.
Their mates are usually sitting in the bus stop laughing their heads off.
They should pass a law in this country to procecute people who do this.
At least the Americans has a law against these Jaywalkers!

I opened the window and gave one a mouthful once.... fortunately I used no naughty words as it turned out to be a neighbours daughter..which also meant that she didn't turn round and give me a load of verbal back.

Stupid stupid thing to do.

NOELallie · 29/12/2006 15:39

for the boys' family though.

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 29/12/2006 15:46

I live near a comp school and a tech college and the council have had to put railings all along the road to stop the kids just walking out in front of the traffic.

Waste of council tax - they are all 13 years and over and they have a lollipop lady and pedestrian crossing to get them to the dinner hall at all breaks.

My DDs primary school has to make do with one lollipop lady when the school has 2 entrances and is in the centre of town.

TwoIfBySea · 29/12/2006 23:53

Well that motorcyclist will always be haunted by the fact that he killed the boy regardless of the fact it wasn't his fault in any way. And for that alone he should be compensated.

I feel sorry for the boys family too but would hope this serves as a good lesson for others wanting to play stupid games. I've already drummed into dts (5 today!) heads about stupid acts and their consequences, hopefully by the time they are older it will have dripped through.

Several years ago my OH hit a nine year old who ran out in front of us causing us to swerve and then turned around and ran back in front again at which point we hit him. He was lucky enough to get away with gravel rash and even though it was not our fault I was shocked when the police said we could claim the damage to the car from the parents. We didn't do this.
