The Independent and Independent on Sunday papers closed

The papers are shutting down, but the i has been sold to another company.

Not sure what happens to the Evening Standard.

It is a shame. the more variety of comment and opinion the better, but everything is about business and making money too.

That's sad. On the rare occasions that I buy Sunday papers, it's always the independent.

The i hasn't really escaped - 133 staff have to reapply for 51 jobs there.

Yes, they were owned by a Russian. It is sad but I can see that it helps the Guardian in that market as a lot of Independent readers are probably potential Guardian readers.

Yes, a sad day for printed media, which I still think has a very valuable role to play.

The Guardian has been getting skinnier and skinner though. I don't imagine they are gloating too much.

I rarely read them but I'm always sorry to hear of job losses.

Slight off topic, but does anyone know if it is financially viable to produce physical newspapers now? Do they cover their costs?

The circulation of all newsprint papers has been decreasing for some time now as more and more people read them online. We used to have a paper delivered every day but now we read everything online.
Will the Independent stop altogether or will it just be available online? If the latter, then I think the same will happen to all newspapers over the next ten years - or less, even.
It's silly of the Guardian to gloat as I don't think their circulation is anything to write home about at the moment.

Apparently it will still be available online in digital format. Kelvin McKenzie was on the Daily Politics and he sort of implied that it may not get many advertisers. I hope he is wrong and it gets viewers/readers and advertisers as it offered an additional, different perspective to other sources.

The Guardian is , I believe, in difficulties too. I used to buy it every day and The Observer on Sunday. Now I get the Friday and Saturday editions for arts coverage and maybe a couple of other days.

I almost gave up completely during the Scottish referendum as its coverage got sillier and sillier until it redeemed itself in the end and came out for No.

If the Guardian was sold out my next choice used to be The Independent but in the last few years my second choice is The Telegraph. It's well written even if I don't agree with it. Can't remember when I last bought an Indy or a Sindy.

It's a while since I bought a physical newspaper - but I don't hold out much hope for the Independent online. I recently deleted it from my phone because it's almost entirely unsatisfactory. Garish, populist, very little real content. It was verging on pointless.

Very sad - such excitement when The Independent began.

I agree about the Independent online, so many adverts and sensationalist links. It's not the paper it was sadly.

The app is poor too. I subscribed to the Kindle Version for a couple of years and that was pretty good, but accidentally unsubscribed and then went back to paper copies of The I as it's easier to share with the DCs.

I was with friends when this came on the news and one of them said in surprise Really? I had no idea the Independent was still around.

They lost me when they backed the Tories at the last general election, lost their credibility.

I agree with you about the guardian lass, I have followed the same pattern as you. I read a lot more online than I used to. I also buy the Torygraph on occasion, though I disagree with it's stance it is well written.

I suppose it is a shame. But the Independent is as dry as dust. I've read it about three times in all the years it's been going so I suppose not really enough to make a judgement. People haven't got time to plough through these weighty articles these days. And people who have got time want to be entertained a bit more. I much prefer the Telegraph. Though I don't get it very often.

after the Guardian's puff piece on Hunt they've probably lost any credibiity as journalists. Sad to see the independent go though

Sad, used to be a good read. Gone down hill though, never seemed to have found its niche in 21st century. Agree with pp that Torygraph and Times are a much better read though, even though I don't agree with their politics. Quality writing, good columnists. Not sure that independent had that for years.

I used to enjoy the Independent on Sunday, as it was a smaller broadsheet.
The others are huge.
I am lucky if I buy the guardian on Saturday now.

but I do read the independent and guardian online. as said, it is good to have other opinions/outlooks on the news.

Let's just remember, if we enjoyed the Indy while it lasted or still read the Grauniad now, that if Rupert Murdoch had not broken the print unions the former would never have opened and the latter would long since have closed. I wonder if the draft obituaries they both obviously have ready for RM will mention that inconvenient fact!
